Chapter 8 - SHADOWS AND SECRETS

Inside his private penthouse office overlooking the glittering city skyline, Rocco Moretti stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, swirling a glass of dark amber scotch.

The double doors opened quietly, and Julian walked in, holding a slim leather folder.

"Boss," Julian said respectfully. "We have a situation."

Rocco didn't turn around immediately. "The FBI?"

Julian looked momentarily surprised. "You already know?"

Rocco took a slow sip of his drink, finally turning to face his manager. A faint, cynical smile touched his lips. "Special Agent David Miller has been trying to put cuffs on me for five years. Do you really think he’d ignore a two-million-dollar underworld audit and a fleet of contractors descending on the east side?"

"Miller visited Sarah Thompson’s house this afternoon," Julian reported, opening the folder. "He tried to pressure her into giving testimony for a RICO case against you."

Rocco’s expression darkened slightly. The glass in his hand tightened. "And what did Mrs. Thompson say?"

Julian smiled faintly. "She told him that her husband is dead, that the system abandoned her, and that if the FBI didn't leave her alone, she’d call your personal line."

Rocco stared at Julian for a moment, the tension in his shoulders slowly dissipating. A genuine, rare smile broke across his face—a look of profound respect that few people in the underworld had ever witnessed.

"She told a federal agent she’d call the mafia boss on him?" Rocco chuckled softly, shaking his head. "That woman has more courage than half my captains."

"She’s protecting her family, Boss," Julian said. "Just like you are protecting your code."

"The FBI thinks this is a game of chess," Rocco said, setting his glass down on the mahogany table. "They think charity is just another form of laundering. But they don't understand the fundamental rule of power, Julian. Power isn't just about fear. Fear builds empires, but loyalty preserves them."

"Miller isn't going to let this go easily," Julian warned. "He’s convinced you orchestrated the entire shakedown ring from the top."

"Let him try," Rocco said calmly, his eyes flashing with sharp intelligence. "Every single transaction Vincent made was flagged, audited, and reversed. There is no paper trail leading to my desk because I never authorized his filth. Miller can investigate all he wants; he’ll only find that the books are cleaner now than they’ve been in a decade."

"What about Vincent?" Julian asked. "He’s been hiding out in the neighboring county. Word is, he’s been talking to federal informants, trying to cut a deal to save his own skin."

Rocco’s smile vanished, replaced by the cold, razor-sharp gaze of a syndicate boss who never left loose ends untied.

"Vincent thinks he can trade my name for immunity?" Rocco’s voice dropped to a low, menacing whisper. "Let him try talking to federal agents with a mouth full of broken teeth. Send Tony and Vance to have a little chat with him. Remind him what happens when a dog bites the hand that fed it for ten years."

"Consider it done, Boss," Julian said, nodding sharply before turning to leave the room.

As Julian closed the door, Rocco walked back to the massive window, looking out over the sprawling metropolis. He had built his life on shadow, steel, and absolute control. But for the first time in his career, he realized that true power wasn't just about ruling the dark—it was about choosing when to let the light in.
