Chapter 9 - The New Foundation

Six months later.

The transition from a life of quiet survival to a life of boundless security and love was smoother than I could have ever imagined.

We didn't stay locked away in the Hidden Hills fortress. With the threats completely eliminated, Adrian restructured his entire global operation. He stepped back from the dark, volatile frontlines, delegating daily logistics to Marcus and a trusted council, while shifting billions of dollars of Blackwood capital into legitimate technology, deep-sea exploration, and global medical research foundations.

He built a brand-new medical institute in Los Angeles named The Ethan Blackwood Foundation for Rare Blood Disorders, ensuring that no child would ever suffer from complex genetic anomalies without immediate, cutting-edge treatment.

On a bright autumn morning, the sun rose over a stunning cliffside property in Montecito—a home Adrian and I had chosen together. It was open, filled with natural light, glass, and warm wood, surrounded by sprawling gardens and white beaches, entirely devoid of the cold, fortress-like feel of his old estates.

Ethan was on the front lawn, wearing a tiny custom racing jumpsuit, putting around a small, low-powered go-kart track Adrian had built for him. His laughter rang out through the salty sea breeze as Marcus timed his laps with a digital stopwatch.

"He's getting faster," Adrian said, stepping behind me on the wrap-around veranda and wrapping his arms around my waist, pulling me back against his chest. He pressed a soft kiss into the crook of my neck.

"Don't encourage him," I laughed, leaning back into his warmth. "His teacher said he tried to explain to his second-grade class that high-speed cornering requires understanding physics and tire traction."

"That's my boy," Adrian said proudly, resting his chin on my shoulder. "Smart, fearless, and completely unbothered by the rules."

"He gets that from you," I teased, turning in his arms to look at him.

Adrian looked immaculate. The hard, lethal lines of his face had softened over the past six months. The coldness in his eyes had been replaced by a quiet, deep peace. He looked like a man who had finally come home from a war that had lasted his entire life.

"I have something for you," Adrian said softly, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.

My heart skipped a beat. "Adrian..."

He opened the box. Inside rested a simple, stunning ring—a flawless, deep crimson diamond set in an intricate band of polished platinum, sculpted with subtle patterns of intertwined vines.

"This diamond was mined from the deepest mantle of the Earth," Adrian said, his voice lowering into that familiar, quiet intensity that always made my breath hitch. "It survived heat, pressure, and darkness for a million years before coming into the light. Seven years ago, I lost you because I didn't know how to love without controlling. Today, I am asking you to be my wife—not to protect you, not to lock you away, but because my life only makes sense when you are standing beside me."

I looked from the glowing crimson diamond up into the eyes of the man who had torn down empires and given his own blood to save our family.

"Yes," I whispered, tears of joy welling in my eyes. "Yes, Adrian. Absolute yes."

He slid the ring onto my finger, fitting perfectly, and pulled me into a fierce, passionate kiss while down on the track, Ethan cheered loudly as he crossed his lap finish line.
