PART 1 — The Pink Hat

The grand ballroom glittered beneath crystal chandeliers as guests gathered for Eleanor Whitmore’s eightieth birthday celebration.

Everyone was smiling.

Everyone except six-year-old Lily.

She stood beside her mother, Sophie, wearing a pale pink dress and a matching bucket hat pulled low over her ears. Her small hands trembled as she stared at the floor.

“Sweetheart, why won't you take off your hat?” Sophie asked softly.

Lily swallowed hard.

“I want to keep it on.”

Before Sophie could ask again, Eleanor—the wealthy family matriarch—approached with a warm smile.

“There’s my favorite great-granddaughter.”

But the moment Eleanor reached out, Lily flinched.

The room fell strangely quiet.

“Lily?” Eleanor whispered.

Tears suddenly filled the little girl's eyes.

Slowly, she lifted the pink hat.

Gasps echoed across the ballroom.

A jagged scar ran from her temple toward her ear. Fresh stitches were still visible beneath strands of unevenly cut hair.

Sophie’s heart nearly stopped.

“Who did this to you?”

Lily’s lip trembled.

“Aunt Victoria.”

Silence crashed over the room.

Across the ballroom, Victoria Whitmore froze.

And for the first time all evening, Eleanor’s smile disappeared.

Because she knew exactly what that scar meant.
