Part 8: The Fall of Dr. Cross

The red emergency strobe lights pulsed against the sterile white walls of Ward B, casting frantic shadows across the room. Elena pulled Grace tightly against her chest, her protective instincts surging to a boiling point. Sophie instinctively shrank back toward Adrian, who stepped in front of the two little girls with an expression of cold, unyielding determination.
“He’s locking down the sub-level,” Adrian said, glancing at his encrypted laptop, which was now flashing a rapid sequence of warning errors. “All digital exits are being overridden from the central security terminal on the ground floor.”
“Can you bypass it?” Elena asked, her voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through her veins.
“It’ll take time,” Adrian replied, pulling a small multi-tool from his belt and popping open the wall-mounted electronic access panel beside the door, exposing a tangled nest of fiber-optic cables. “Cross has initiated a hard-wired quarantine protocol. If I cut the wrong wire, these doors will lock permanently.”
Heavy footsteps echoed down the concrete hallway outside. Shouting voices bounced off the hard surfaces.
“Clear the corridor! Check every room!”
Adrian worked with blinding speed, his fingers moving with the precision of a master surgeon performing an emergency cardiac repair. Sparks flew from the exposed wires as he crossed two data lines, trying to trigger a manual override code he had memorized years ago when he helped design the facility's architecture.
Suddenly, the heavy glass door of the recovery suite slid open with a sharp hiss.
Two large security guards stepped into the room, wearing tactical vests and stern expressions. But before they could take another step, a tall, imposing figure pushed past them, stepping into the harsh red light.
Dr. Victor Cross.
He didn’t look panicked. Instead, a cold, triumphant smile played across his lips as he looked at Elena, Grace, Sophie, and Adrian.
“A touching family reunion,” Cross said smoothly, stepping further into the room. His eyes shifted to Adrian with undisguised contempt. “I always knew you were a sentimental fool, Adrian. Throwing away a brilliant career in cardiothoracic surgery just to play hide-and-seek in the basement. And for what? A couple of children whose medical anomalies belong to the institutional registry of St. Matthew.”
Adrian didn’t turn around from the wall panel, but his voice was ice cold. “You’re finished, Victor. The decryption logs, the real patient registries, and the illegal transfer files are already being uploaded to federal oversight authorities via an encrypted satellite relay.”
Cross’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he recovered his composure, letting out a dry, chilling laugh. “Do you really think federal authorities care about a few administrative discrepancies in a private research wing? St. Matthew’s board of directors is entirely in my pocket. By morning, you’ll all be facing trespassing, medical tampering, and psychiatric evaluation charges.”
“Not if the truth gets out first,” a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway.
Cross spun around sharply.
Standing in the doorway, flanked by two state health inspectors and a uniformed police captain, was the Chief Executive Officer of the St. Matthew hospital board, alongside a digital forensics team carrying high-tech data extraction units.
Cross’s face drained of all color. He took a step backward, stammering, “H-How did you... this area is restricted—”
“Restricted from public view, yes, Dr. Cross,” the CEO said coldly, stepping into the room and gesturing to the inspectors. “But not from a formal board audit triggered by an anonymous whistle-blower package containing complete telemetry and financial logs of unauthorized pediatric experimentation.”
The CEO looked past Cross at Adrian, giving him a respectful nod. “Thank you, Dr. Cole. Your persistence finally brought the truth to light.”
The two police officers stepped forward, placing heavy steel handcuffs around Dr. Victor Cross’s wrists as he struggled in vain against the inevitable weight of his crimes.

“This isn’t over!” Cross screamed as he was hauled out of the room down the corridor. “The hospital will fall without my research!”
As the echoes of Cross’s protests faded down the hall, a profound, heavy silence settled over the room, replaced moments later by the warm, tearful laughter of a family finally reunited.
