Chapter 8 - The Shadow Falls

The aftermath of that night at the Mercer Genetics Institute rippled across the country like a massive earthquake.

By morning, headlines across the nation read: MICHIGAN SENATOR ARRESTED IN ILLEGAL GENETIC HARVESTING SCHEME and HOSPITAL COVER-UP EXPOSED: THE LILY VANCE STORY.

The Department of Justice immediately launched a sweeping investigation into Crestwood Regional Hospital, Apex Surrogacy, and Sterling BioTech. Within forty-eight hours, federal prosecutors unsealed a thirty-two-count indictment charging Senator Thomas Sterling, Dr. Preston Hale, Dr. Victor Mercer, and seven board members with human trafficking, medical battery, illegal genetic experimentation, falsification of public records, and conspiracy.

Because of Dr. Thorne’s brave decision to hand over the unredacted digital log, and Marissa’s courageous testimony, the government’s case was airtight.

Two weeks after the raid, Grant, Eleanor, and I sat in a high-ceilinged conference room at the Federal Building in Detroit. Sitting across from us was Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Jenkins, a sharp, empathetic woman who had taken personal charge of our case.

“The grand jury has returned indictments on all counts,” Ms. Jenkins informed us, sliding a legal folder across the table. “Senator Sterling tried to post bail, but given his extensive private assets and personal aircraft, the judge ruled him an extreme flight risk. He will remain in federal custody until trial.”

“What about Dr. Hale?” Grant asked, holding my hand tightly under the table.

“Hale’s medical license has been permanently revoked by the State of Michigan,” Jenkins replied. “He is currently negotiating a plea deal. In exchange for a reduced sentence, he has agreed to testify against Sterling and expose every illegal procedure conducted at Mercer over the last five years.”

I let out a deep, trembling breath. For the first time in weeks, the crushing weight on my chest began to lift.

“And Marissa?” I asked softly. “What happens to her?”

Ms. Jenkins smiled gently. “Given that Marissa was subjected to extreme coercion, blackmailed with a suppressed legal record, and actively assisted federal law enforcement in bringing down the operation, the Justice Department has granted her full immunity. The old charges from her past have been officially dismissed due to prosecutorial misconduct by her father’s network.”

Tears sprang to my eyes. “Thank God.”

When we left the Federal Building, the spring sun was shining bright and warm over Detroit. For twelve long years, every time I looked toward the future, I had seen only gray clouds, medical bills, waiting rooms, and the lingering ache of lost hopes.

Now, as I looked at Grant, I saw a bright, clear sky.

We drove straight back to the secluded house where Eleanor had been looking after Lily. When we walked through the door, Eleanor was gently rocking Lily in her arms near the bay window.

I ran across the room and took my daughter into my arms. I held her against my cheek, breathing in her soft, sweet scent. Lily opened her bright blue eyes, looked up at me, and let out a tiny, soft coo, reaching her tiny fingers up to touch my nose.

“You’re safe now, sweet girl,” I whispered, tears spilling over my eyelashes and dripping onto her blanket. “No one will ever hurt you again. Your mommy and daddy are never letting you go.”

Grant wrapped his arms around both of us, holding us tight, as the sunlight streamed through the window, bathing our small family in a warm, golden glow.
