Chapter 5 - The Infiltration Plan

We met Marissa twelve hours later at an abandoned diner off Route 31. She looked pale and frail, wrapped in a heavy coat, but her eyes possessed a fierce determination that matched my own.
Eleanor had called in a massive favor from a former federal prosecutor named Marcus Vance—her older brother—who operated a high-level private security and legal investigative firm in Detroit. Marcus arrived with a team of two former intelligence analysts and a mountain of encrypted tech.
Inside the back of Marcus’s black surveillance van, parked behind the diner, we mapped out the layout of the Mercer Genetics Institute.
“The Mercer Institute is a fortress,” Marcus explained, pointing to a digital 3D model of the building displayed on a large monitor. “It has biometric locks, security cameras at every corridor, and a private armed security team funded by Sterling BioTech. The vault where they keep high-value biological samples—Vault 4—is located two floors underground.”
“Can we get the police involved?” Grant asked. “We have the falsified hospital papers. Isn't that enough for a search warrant?”
“Not against Senator Sterling,” Marcus said grimly. “The local police chief is a political appointee who owes his career to the Sterling family. If a judge signs a warrant, the local police will notify Mercer forty-five minutes before they execute it. By the time anyone walks into Vault 4, that sample will be incinerated, and all digital records of Lily’s surgery will be permanently wiped.”
“So we have to get the physical proof ourselves,” I said, looking at the screen.
“No, Clara,” Grant said immediately, grabbing my hand. “It’s too dangerous. We can’t leave Lily.”
“Lily stays with Eleanor and Marcus’s trusted team at the safehouse,” I said, looking my husband straight in the eyes with a fierce, unwavering focus. “Grant, they took a piece of our baby. They hold the genetic code that they plan to replicate. As long as that sample exists in their lab, Lily will never be safe. They will monitor her, track her, and spend her entire childhood treating her as biological property. We have to destroy that sample and steal their primary server data.”
“She’s right,” Marcus agreed. “The only way to completely dismantle Senator Sterling’s defense is a dual strike: we expose the medical battery on Lily publically with hard digital evidence while simultaneously destroying their ability to use her genetic code.”
“How do we get inside Vault 4?” Grant asked, his protective instincts shifting from defense to attack.
Marissa stepped forward. “I still have my high-level security clearance badge from when I worked as an administrative assistant at the Institute four years ago. My father never revoked it because he used my old credentials to run covert payments through the agency.”
Marcus checked his laptop. “The badge is still active on their secondary network. It won't get us into Vault 4 directly, but it will get us into the sub-basement utility corridor.”
“And I know the doctor who runs the overnight lab analysis,” Marissa added. “Dr. Aris Thorne. He was my instructor in college. He’s a good man who believes he’s working on generic cancer research. He has no idea my father is using the lab for illegal human genetic harvesting.”
“If we can convince Dr. Thorne to give us access to the primary server log,” Eleanor said, “we won't just have a case. We will have a ironclad criminal indictment for human trafficking, medical fraud, and illegal genetic experimentation.”
The plan was set. We had thirty-six hours before the Monday morning procedure was scheduled to take place.
That night, back at the cabin, I sat beside Lily’s crib. I reached down and lightly traced the soft blanket wrapped around her. Beneath her yellow onesie, the tiny surgical mark was covered by a clean bandage. I leaned down and kissed her warm forehead, smelling the sweet, innocent scent of baby lotion and milk.

“I am going to fix this, my little sweet girl,” I whispered softly against her skin. “Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”
Grant walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder. “We built this family out of twelve years of tears, Clara,” he said, his voice deep and resolute. “We aren't letting anyone tear it down.”
