Chapter 10 - The Forever After

Five years later, the lawn behind Caldwell House echoed with the sound of joyous laughter and pounding little footsteps.

Leo, now a headstrong and energetic five-year-old with my eyes and Grace’s bright smile, was busy chasing a golden retriever across the frost-kissed grass while his little sister, two-year-old Maya, cheered him on from the safety of a picnic blanket.

I sat on the veranda steps with a cup of coffee in hand, watching Grace walk across the lawn with a basket of autumn apples. The morning sun caught her hair, turning it the color of warm honey.

She stopped, looked back at me, and flashed that exact same smile she had worn beneath the stone archway six years ago—the smile that had anchored me through every storm, every board meeting, and every dark corridor of the past.

I stood up, walked down the steps, and met her halfway across the grass.

Without a word, she handed me the basket, wrapped her arms around my neck, and pulled me down into a long, sweet kiss.

“You’re home early,” she murmured against my lips.

“I told you,” I smiled, resting my forehead gently against hers as our children ran past us in a flurry of laughter and muddy boots. “I’m always going to be home before it gets dark.”

Caldwell House stood behind us, tall, proud, and bathed in the golden autumn light—no longer a fortress of secrets and fear, but a true home filled with warmth, laughter, and an unbreakable love that would last for generations.
