Part 5: The Fall of Arrogance

Before Vanessa could even lift herself off the floor, my phone began to vibrate violently in my hand. The screen flashed with an incoming call from Victor Vance, my former mentor and senior partner at Vance & Associates Law Firm.

I tapped the speakerphone button so that both Mark and Vanessa could hear every single word.

“Claire,” Victor’s deep, authoritative voice boomed through the living room. “I’ve reviewed the encrypted financial files and corporate documents you sent over. Good lord, Claire. Your husband and his little partner didn’t just commit routine embezzlement; they orchestrated a full-scale corporate heist. We have enough evidence here to initiate emergency freezing orders on every single asset they share.”

Mark let out a ragged gasp, dropping heavily onto the sofa with his head in his hands.

“Victor,” I replied calmly, my eyes locked on the kneeling Vanessa. “Can we secure a freezing injunction before market open tomorrow morning?”

“It’s already in motion,” Victor replied smoothly. “I’ve routed the audit reports directly to the chairman of Mark’s board of directors, along with a courtesy copy to the financial crimes division of the federal prosecutor's office. By 9:00 AM tomorrow, Mark will be stripped of his partnership, locked out of his corporate accounts, and facing multiple felony indictments for fraud and industrial espionage. As for Miss Cole, her shell company Apex Solutions has already been flagged for immediate asset forfeiture.”

Vanessa let out a sharp, choked sob and crumpled forward, pressing her forehead against the floorboards. All the money she had stolen, all the luxury she had flaunted—it was all gone in an instant, frozen by the very legal system she thought she could outsmart.

“Thank you, Victor,” I said. “Keep me updated on the filings.”

“Always a pleasure, Claire,” Victor chuckled darkly. “It’s good to have you back in the game. The corporate world didn't know what it was missing when you retired. See you tomorrow.”

The line went dead.

The silence that followed was absolute. Mark was a broken man, weeping softly into his hands, realizing that his career, his status, his money, and his reputation were completely eradicated. Vanessa was kneeling in defeat, utterly crushed by the consequences of her own malice.

“Pack your bags, Mark,” I said, turning away from them and walking over to gently stroke Lily’s head. “You have one hour to clear your things out of this house. If you aren't gone by the time the clock strikes six, I’ll have the county sheriff throw your clothes out onto the front lawn.”

Mark raised his tear-stained face, looking at me with pleading, bloodshot eyes. “Claire... please. Where will I go? What about us? What about eight years of marriage?”

“Eight years of marriage ended the moment you decided your mistress had the right to abuse our child,” I replied without even looking back at him. “You made your choice, Mark. Now live with the consequences.”
