Chapter 6 - The Long Goodbye

The next three hours passed like a quiet dream.

There were no more screaming alarms, no more heavy-booted men in the hallway, and no more legal threats. The seventh floor of St. Catherine’s had returned to a serene, whisper-quiet sanctuary.

Dr. Vance came in to check on Genevieve and the baby, expressing quiet amazement at how smoothly the infant was adjusting. She gave Alessandro a long, evaluating look before silently stepping out, leaving the young family alone in the soft morning light.

Alessandro sat on the small plastic stool, watching Genevieve teach herself how to hold Leo comfortably while adjusting to her surgical recovery. Whenever she struggled to shift her position, Alessandro stood up, gently placing his hands behind her back to support her weight, careful not to touch her incision.

For the first time in their lives, there was no grand luxury surrounding them—no ocean views from a Southampton estate, no private chefs, no silk robes. Just a cramped hospital room, a cup of lukewarm ice water, and a plastic bassinet.

And yet, it was the closest they had ever been.

“Does it hurt?” Alessandro asked gently as Genevieve winced while adjusting her blanket.

“A little,” she murmured, looking up at him. “The doctor said the first few days after a C-section are the hardest.”

“I’ll hire the best private nursing care for when you leave,” Alessandro said automatically, before catching himself and sighing. “I’m sorry... old habits. I can’t hire them anymore. All my personal accounts are frozen as of six AM.”

Genevieve looked at him, a faint, soft smile touching the corner of her lips—the first genuine smile he had seen on her face in almost a year. “I don't need private nurses, Alessandro. My mother is flying in from Vermont tomorrow. She’s going to stay with me at a small house I rented in Upstate New York.”

Alessandro felt a sharp pang of envy toward her mother, but he nodded respectfully. “Upstate is good. It’s quiet. Fresh air for Leo.”

He looked at his watch. 7:15 AM.

Time was running out.

A light knock came at the door. Mateo stood in the doorway, wearing a plain brown coat, looking visibly stripped of his usual armed swagger.

“Boss,” Mateo said quietly. “District Attorney Vance’s federal marshals are downstairs in the lobby. They’re ready.”

Genevieve’s body went rigid. She looked up at Alessandro, her hands instinctively tightening around Leo.

Alessandro stood up slowly. He smoothed down his wrinkled white shirt, feeling the immense weight of the moment pressing down on his chest. He turned to Mateo.

“Mateo,” Alessandro said, his voice clear. “Your severance package was cleared through the offshore escrow account before the freezes went into effect. You’re a free man. Take your family and leave New York.”

Mateo’s eyes glistened with rare emotion. He gave Alessandro a crisp, respectful nod. “It was an honor, Alessandro. Take care of yourself.” Mateo looked at Genevieve, bowing his head slightly. “Mrs. Romano.”

Then he stepped back into the hallway, closing the door behind him, leaving Alessandro alone with his wife and son for the final few minutes.

Alessandro walked around the bed and stood right beside Genevieve. He looked down at his sleeping son, his heart breaking into a thousand pieces. He had only just found him, and now he had to leave him.

“May I... may I hold him?” Alessandro asked, his voice barely audible, filled with a desperate, humble hope.

Genevieve looked at him. She saw the powerful, dangerous Alessandro Romano stripped down to a broken, weeping man who wanted nothing more than to touch his child.

Without a word, she carefully lifted the swaddled bundle and placed little Leo into Alessandro’s arms.

Alessandro’s breath hitched. He supported the baby’s tiny head with his massive hand, pulling the warm, fragile little boy close to his chest. He closed his eyes, pressing his lips gently against Leo’s soft forehead, inhaling the sweet, pure scent of his son.

Tears unspooled silently down Alessandro’s cheeks, dripping onto the blue-and-pink blanket.

“Hey, little guy,” Alessandro whispered, his voice trembling violently. “It’s your dad. I’m... I’m going away for a little while. But I want you to listen to your mother. She’s the bravest, strongest woman in the world. Everything good in you comes from her.”

He leaned down, whispering into the baby’s tiny ear. “I promise you, Leo... when I come back, I’ll be the man you deserve. I won’t ever let a shadow touch your life.”

Genevieve watched them, her hand pressed against her mouth as tears spilled freely over her fingers. Seeing the violent, fearsome mobster cradle a seven-pound infant with such infinite, trembling tenderness washed away the last lingering remnants of her anger.

Alessandro carefully, reluctantly handed Leo back to Genevieve. He placed his hands over hers, looking deep into her eyes.

“Thank you, Eve,” he whispered, his voice thick with unsaid love. “Thank you for saving him. And thank you for saving me.”

He leaned down and gently pressed his lips to her forehead, lingering there for a long, quiet second.

Then, without looking back, Alessandro Romano turned on his heel and walked out of the room.

May you like

Genevieve listened to the sound of his footsteps echoing down the quiet hospital corridor, growing fainter and fainter until they were gone completely.

She pulled Leo closer to her chest, looking out the hospital window as the sun finally broke through the storm clouds, filling the room with warm, golden light.
