Chapter 3 - The Broken Vow

The silence in the operating room was heavy enough to crush a lesser man. The rhythmic, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor provided a agonizing pulse to the standoff.

Alessandro didn’t look at the lawyer. He didn’t look at the armed guards standing beyond the glass doors. He took three deliberate, unhurried steps toward the bassinet.

“Stand down, Mr. Romano,” Marcus Kane warned, reaching into his coat for a set of legal notices. “If you touch that child or force your way onto this property further, I will have an emergency injunction served within twenty minutes. The state of New York will take temporary custody of the infant while—”

In one seamless, blinding motion, Alessandro turned and grabbed Marcus by the lapels of his custom suit. He slammed the lawyer against the tiled wall, the force of the impact knocking the breath out of the man’s lungs and causing his briefcase to clatter noisily to the floor.

“Alessandro, no!” Genevieve cried out, trying to push herself up on her elbows, but the surgical incision across her lower abdomen seized her with sharp, agony-inducing pain. She gasped, sinking back into the mattress.

Alessandro leaned in close to Marcus’s ear, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper that chilled the lawyer to his very marrow. “You have five seconds to take your papers, turn around, and walk out of this hospital. If you mention taking my son into state custody again, I will make sure you disappear so deeply into the foundation of this city that not even your family will find a bone to bury.”

Marcus’s confidence evaporated in an instant. Looking into Alessandro’s jet-black, unblinking eyes, he realized he wasn't dealing with a corporate executive who feared court orders; he was dealing with an apex predator defending his den.

“I... I am only acting on my client’s instructions,” Marcus managed to choke out.

“Your client is my wife,” Alessandro said coldly, releasing his grip. Marcus slid down the wall slightly before scrambling to pick up his leather bag. “And her husband is taking care of her now. Leave.”

Marcus didn’t hesitate. He practically ran through the double doors, nearly tripping over Mateo, who stood outside with a menacing, faint smirk on his face.

Alessandro smoothed down the lapels of his overcoat, took a deep breath, and turned back to the bed.

Genevieve was crying silently, her whole body trembling under the thin white hospital sheets. “You haven’t changed,” she wept softly. “Not even for a second. You still use violence to fix everything. You still think you own the world.”

Alessandro walked up to the edge of the bed and sat down heavily on the small plastic stool next to it. He looked down at his hands—his broad, calloused hands that had signed million-dollar contracts and ordered ruthless retribution against those who threatened his empire. Then he looked at the small plastic bassinet beside her.

Inside lay a tiny human being, no larger than his forearm. The baby had a tuft of thick, jet-black hair and tiny, red, fist-clenched fingers that reached aimlessly into the warm air.

Alessandro’s breath caught in his throat. He slowly reached out a single finger. The baby’s tiny hand brushed against his knuckle, and automatically, those miniscule fingers wrapped around Alessandro’s index finger with a surprisingly strong grip.

An electric shock went through Alessandro’s chest—a sudden, violent rush of emotion so intense it made his eyes burn with unbidden heat. He had spent seven months filled with bloodlust, revenge, and hatred for whoever had taken his wife. But holding his son’s hand, the rage vanished, leaving behind an empty, aching chasm of pure vulnerability.

“He has your chin,” Alessandro whispered, his voice cracking for the first time in his life. “He... he looks just like you, Eve.”

Genevieve turned her head away, staring at the blank white wall, her tears soaking into the fabric of her pillow. “His name is Leo,” she whispered, her voice laced with deep, profound exhaustion. “I named him after my grandfather.”

“Leo,” Alessandro repeated, testing the name on his tongue. “Leo Romano.”

“No,” Genevieve snapped weakly, turning her head back to glare at him with fiercely defensive eyes. “Abigail’s son. Leo Mercer. I won’t let him carry your name, Alessandro. I won’t let him grow up with a target on his back. I won’t let him wake up at three in the morning to the sound of gunshots outside his nursery.”

Alessandro winced as if she had struck him across the face. “Is that what you think I would let happen to him?”

“That is what happened to me!” she shouted, her voice breaking into a ragged sob. “Did you forget the night in March? The night they shot through our living room windows in Southampton? You shoved me onto the floor, covered me with your body, and told me it was just a business dispute! I was two months pregnant, Alessandro! Two months! I spent that entire night hiding in a reinforced panic room while you and Mateo hunted those men down in the driveway!”

Alessandro closed his eyes, the memory rushing back with horrifying clarity. The glass shattering. The deafening roar of automatic weapons. The smell of copper and gunpowder lingering in their home for weeks.

“I protected you,” Alessandro said quietly. “Nobody touched you.”

“You brought the war home!” she cried, clutching her stomach in pain. “You promised me when we got married that you were going legitimate! You promised me you were stepping away from the docks, away from the Costa deals, away from the street money! But you lied to me. You slipped right back into the shadows the second it was convenient for you.”

“I was building a fortress for us!” Alessandro said, leaning forward, his eyes desperate for her to understand. “I was securing our future! You think men like me can just walk away from that life with a polite resignation letter? If I don't hold the power, Eve, our enemies will crush us! I was buying up shipping lines, real estate, clean assets—so that our children would never have to touch the things I touched!”

“You were doing it because you love the control!” Genevieve fired back, her eyes flashing with a mix of fury and heartbroken disappointment. “You don’t know how to exist without being the most dangerous man in the room. And I realized... if I stayed, my baby would grow up learning how to be just like you. A man who thinks love means building a prettier cage.”

The words hit him like a physical blow. A prettier cage.

For four years, he had showered her with everything money could buy—gated estates, private jets, rare art, high fashion. He thought he was worshipping her. He thought he was giving her the world. But to her, the iron security detail, the bulletproof limousines, and the constant shadows of his guards had been nothing more than an elegant prison.

“I left because I had to save him,” Genevieve whispered softly, her energy draining rapidly. “I spent months hiding in a tiny two-bedroom apartment in Astoria. I rode the subway. I bought my own groceries. I worked remotely as an online tutor. And for the first time in four years... I could breathe. I wasn't waiting for a phone call telling me my husband was dead in a ditch.”

Alessandro sat motionless, his finger still held tightly in his newborn son’s grasp. The room was deathly quiet except for the baby’s tiny, soft snuffles.

“You think you did this alone,” Alessandro said softly, his voice dangerously calm.

Genevieve blinked. “What?”

Alessandro leaned closer, his dark eyes searching her face. “You had a pristine fake identity. High-level medical insurance that bypassed standard security checks. A safe apartment in Astoria owned by a shell corporation registered in Delaware. Eve... a schoolteacher doesn't know how to set up a Delaware shell company in three days.”

Genevieve’s face drained of color. “I... I paid a broker online. A private consultant...”

“No, you didn't,” Alessandro said, his tone darkening. “You were helped by someone who knew my security network inside and out. Someone who wanted you gone so that I would go to war.”

Genevieve stared at him, her lips parting in sudden, creeping realization. “What are you talking about?”

Before Alessandro could answer, the heavy doors of the surgical room swung open once more. Mateo walked in, his expression dead serious.

“Boss,” Mateo said, his voice cold. “Vincenzo just arrived downstairs. He brought eight of our top guys from the Brooklyn crew. He says he’s here to 'secure the family' and handle the media situation.”

Alessandro slowly released his finger from little Leo’s hand. He stood up, towering over the bed, his presence filling the room with a cold, terrifying aura.

He looked down at Genevieve, whose eyes were wide with a sudden, horrifying terror that had nothing to do with him.

“Stay here with the baby,” Alessandro commanded softly. “Mateo, lock this wing. Nobody enters this room except Dr. Vance. If anyone else tries to step through that door... shoot them.”
