Chapter 9 - The Halston-Carter Initiative

The following year, on the one-year anniversary of the rescue, the Halston Group made a landmark announcement that dominated the front page of every major newspaper in the state.

Harrison Halston stood at the podium in the grand ballroom of the Halston Grand Hotel, flanked by executive board members, community leaders, and fourteen-year-old Ruby Carter, who stood alongside Julian as a junior co-chair of the newly established foundation.

"Today, the Halston Group is launching the Carter-Halston Community Initiative," Harrison announced to a room packed with reporters and flashing camera bulbs. "A fifty-million-dollar fund dedicated to rebuilding urban housing complexes, providing comprehensive medical care access for underprivileged families, and installing emergency response training programs in every public facility across the state."

Microphones captured every word. Flashbulbs illuminated the stage.

A reporter from the city's largest daily newspaper raised his hand. "Mr. Halston, this is an unprecedented philanthropic commitment for your company. What inspired such a massive shift in corporate focus?"

Harrison paused, looking back toward the young girl standing beside his son.

"A year ago, a child was trapped in a dark car in our parking garage," Harrison said into the microphone, his voice ringing with absolute clarity. "Two adults walked past and ignored her cries. But a thirteen-year-old girl named Ruby Carter stopped. She didn't look away. She taught us that the most important thing in business—and in life—is paying attention to the people society tries to forget."

The applause that followed was deafening. Reporters turned their cameras toward Ruby, shouting questions, eager to capture the story of the girl who had changed an empire.

Ruby didn't shy away from the lights this time. She stood tall, her head held high, wearing a simple blue dress and carrying no canvas bag filled with medicine—because her grandmother was healthy, safe, and watching proudly from the front row of the audience.

Julian leaned over and whispered, "I think you officially own the city now."

Ruby smiled, nudging him back with her elbow. "No, Julian. I just helped open the doors."
