Chapter 6 - A New Horizon

The transition from Maple Street to the Maple Park townhome felt less like moving and more like stepping through a portal into an entirely different universe.

The new home smelled of fresh cedar, polished hardwood, and baked apples. There were no drafty windows, no flickering hallway lights, and no peeling wallpaper. For the first time in her life, Ruby had her own bedroom—a spacious room with a tall bay window overlooking a quiet, tree-lined street covered in pristine white snow.

On her first official weekend at the new home, a familiar black SUV pulled up to the curb.

Ruby watched from her second-story window as the rear door opened. A boy stepped out, wearing a thick navy pea coat and a white scarf. He looked a little pale still, but he stood tall, steady, and upright.

Julian Halston walked up the cobblestone path and rang the brass doorbell.

Ruby opened the door before the chime had even finished echoing through the hall.

Julian smiled, holding up a large cardboard box filled with pastries from the Halston Grand Hotel bakery. "Hi, Ruby."

"Hi, Julian," Ruby said, a slow, genuine smile spreading across her face. "You look better."

"I feel better," Julian said, stepping into the warm entryway. "Dad said I could come visit, provided I didn't wander off into any mysterious parking garages."

Ruby laughed—a bright, clear sound that she hadn't made in years. "Good rule to follow."

They walked out onto the back patio, where Martha was sitting comfortably in a heated sunroom, reading a leather-bound book. Julian set the pastry box on the patio table and turned to Ruby, his expression turning serious.

"My dad told me everything," Julian said quietly. "About how you found me, how you broke the window, how you didn't listen to the guards."

"Anyone would have done it," Ruby said, looking down at her hands.

"No," Julian replied firmly. "They didn't. Two guards walked right past me. Leonard Shaw walked right past me. You were the only one who actually looked."

Julian reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, flat box wrapped in silver paper. He handed it to her.

"What's this?" Ruby asked, surprised.

"Open it."

Ruby untied the silver ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside lay a sleek, modern smartphone—brand new, fully activated, with no cracked screen and a battery that showed one hundred percent. Engraved on the back casing in delicate script were the words: To the girl who looked.

"My dad bought it for you," Julian explained. "So you can always call for help when you need it. And... so you can keep in touch with me. If you want to, that is. We're starting at St. Jude's together next Monday."

May you like

Ruby ran her thumb over the smooth metallic casing. She looked up at Julian, whose eyes were bright with genuine friendship and gratitude.

"I'd like that," Ruby said softly.
