Chapter 8 - The University Files

The morning sun broke through the hospital windows, casting a warm, golden glow across room 418. The chaos of the previous night had faded into a quiet, orderly peace. Victor Vance was behind bars awaiting federal arraignment, his corporate empire scrambling to contain the fallout of his illegal proxy operations. Agent Diane Vance had left a secure encrypted drive with Asher containing every decrypted file regarding the manipulated proxy agreements, ensuring the Lennox family was entirely legally protected.
Malik was awake now, sitting up in his bed across the hall, happily eating hospital pancakes while watching cartoons on a tablet Asher had provided.
In room 418, Laney sat propped up against the pillows, holding their newborn daughter in one arm while looking down at the baby boy sleeping soundly in the bassinet beside her.
Asher sat in the chair next to the bed, reviewing the encrypted drive Agent Vance had left behind. His eyes scanned lines of classified medical trial logs dating back nearly a decade, when both he and Laney had participated in an experimental university-funded bio-tech research study to help pay off their undergraduate tuition.
“It was the Genesis Project,” Asher murmured, his eyes fixed on the glowing screen of his laptop. “We thought it was just a standard pharmaceutical trial for immune system fortification. We never read the deep-storage fine print about cellular preservation.”
Laney looked up from the baby girl in her arms, her expression a mix of awe and lingering disbelief. “So all these years… our DNA carried a dormant legacy from that study? And it resurfaced now?”
“According to the decrypted files,” Asher said, looking up to meet her eyes, “the project was funded by an independent bio-tech firm that Victor Vance secretly acquired years later. He didn't just stumble into our lives by accident seven months ago, Laney. He’s been tracking our genetic compatibility profile since our college days.”
Laney shivered slightly, shifting the baby closer to her chest. “He played a very long game.”
“He did,” Asher agreed, closing the laptop with a definitive snap. He reached out, gently placing his hand over hers. “And he lost. Every file, every fabricated claim, every illegal contract—it’s all permanently incinerated under federal seal. We are completely free.”
Laney looked down at their intertwined fingers, then up at Asher’s face. The harsh, unreachable CEO who had prioritized boardroom meetings over family dinners was entirely gone. In his place sat a man who had stared down corporate ruin, federal raids, and the terrifying abyss of losing everything he loved, and had fought his way back to the people who mattered most.
“Are you going to be okay with this?” Laney whispered, her voice tinged with lingering vulnerability. “With a quiet life? Leaving the endless expansion of Lennox Global behind?”
Asher smiled—a genuine, warm smile that Laney hadn't seen in years. He leaned forward, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.
“Lennox Global will run just fine with a professional executive board,” Asher said softly. “My priority isn't building an empire anymore, Laney. It’s protecting the family I almost lost.”

Before Laney could reply, the door creaked open, and Malik wheeled himself into the room, grinning broadly with syrup on his chin.
“Mom! Dad! When are we going home? I want to show the twins my Lego castle!”
