Chapter 5 - The Federal Warrant

“Victor Vance. Asher Lennox.”

The woman’s voice cut through the heavy tension of room 418 like a surgical scalpel. She wore a sharp navy trench coat, her silver-rimmed glasses catching the harsh hospital light as she flipped open an official leather-bound badge.

“Special Agent Diane Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation, White-Collar Crime and Asset Recovery Division.”

Victor’s composure finally cracked, a flicker of genuine shock crossing his features. “Diane? What is the meaning of this? You have no jurisdiction here.”

“I have jurisdiction anywhere interstate financial fraud, coercion, and corporate kidnapping intersect, cousin,” Agent Diane Vance replied, her tone freezing the air in the room. She motioned to the two local police officers behind her. “Secure the perimeter. No one leaves this room.”

Asher stood frozen, his eyes darting between Victor and the federal agent who shared his rival’s last name. “Cousin?” he muttered. “What game are you playing, Victor?”

“It’s not a game, Mr. Lennox,” Agent Vance said, stepping further into the room and pulling a thick manila folder from her briefcase. She tossed it onto the tray table above Laney’s bed, right beside Victor’s disputed contract. “For the past three years, the FBI has been tracking an illegal proxy network operating out of offshore accounts managed by Vance Industries. They use manufactured distress scenarios to force vulnerable individuals—specifically estranged spouses of high-net-worth executives—into signing away custody rights to unborn heirs, creating shell corporations disguised as trusts.”

Laney dropped her hands from her face, staring at the federal agent in sheer disbelief. “You… you knew?”

“We knew of the operation, Mrs. Lennox, but we couldn't prove the local entanglement until you went into labor at this specific facility today,” Agent Vance explained, her eyes softening slightly as she looked toward the hospital bed. “Your disappearance seven months ago wasn't a random flight. Victor’s corporate intelligence intercepted your communications, engineered a false narrative that your life was in danger from Asher, and funneled you straight into his safehouse network.”

Asher felt the room tilt. He turned slowly toward Victor, whose face had gone deathly pale.

“You did this?” Asher’s voice was a low, terrifying rumble. “You engineered our separation? You tore my family apart just to get your hands on future equity in Lennox Global?”

“It’s called strategic positioning, Asher!” Victor snapped, losing his cool as the police officers stepped closer to his flanks. “Lennox Global was growing too fast. A bitter divorce and a missing family would have tanked your stock value by forty percent. I simply offered a soft landing and managed the fallout!”

“You lied to me,” Laney whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and overwhelming grief. “You told me Asher was planning to strip Malik away from me. You said my only safety was signing everything over to your trust.”

“And you were foolish enough to believe it,” Victor sneered, before nodding sharply to his own bodyguards. “Move.”

Before Victor’s men could take a step toward the door, the two local police officers unholstered their tasers, their red laser sights painting precise dots across the guards' chests.

“Step back, sir,” the lead officer ordered. “You are obstructing a federal investigation.”

Victor glared around the room, realizing every escape route had been systematically blocked. With a dark, venomous scowl, he pointed a shaking finger at Asher. “This isn't over, Lennox. You might have the babies tonight, but my legal team owns half the patents currently registered under your name. You’ll be begging me for a settlement before the quarter ends.”

As Victor was escorted out in handcuffs by the local police, Agent Vance turned her attention back to Asher and Laney.

“He’s bluffing about the patents, Mr. Lennox,” Agent Vance said quietly. “Our warrant includes a full seizure of his digital servers. Every fraudulent contract he holds is already null and void under federal RICO statutes.”

As the heavy metal door clicked shut behind the departing federal agents, quiet finally descended upon room 418. Only the soft, rhythmic hum of the medical monitors remained.

Asher slowly exhaled, his shoulders dropping as the adrenaline receded, leaving behind a profound, aching exhaustion. He turned back toward the bed where Laney lay, surrounded by her newborn twins, with Malik sitting quietly beside her holding her hand.
