Chapter 6 - The Confession in the ICU

Forty-eight hours later, Rebecca opened her eyes in the intensive care unit. The ceiling tiles swam into focus, followed by the rhythmic hiss of an oxygen monitor.
Her first thought was not of herself.
“The… baby,” she croaked, her voice dry as sandpaper.
A nurse rushed to her bedside, pressing a call button. “You’re safe, Mrs. Sloan. Your baby girl is in the neonatal intensive care unit. She’s strong. She’s breathing on her own now.”
Rebecca closed her eyes, tears spilling over her lashes. “Theo… where is Theo?”
Before the nurse could answer, the door swung open. Grant walked in, holding a bouquet of white lilies, his face arranged in an expression of profound relief.
“Rebecca, thank God,” Grant murmured, stepping forward to kiss her forehead. “The police have the boy in a temporary psychiatric hold. We’ll need to figure out specialized long-term care for him. He nearly killed you.”
Rebecca pulled her head back, her gray eyes—so identical to her son’s—locking onto her husband with terrifying clarity.
“He didn't try to kill me, Grant,” Rebecca whispered, her voice gaining strength. “He saved my life.”
Grant’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. “The patch, darling... the doctor said you had a severe reaction to the wellness sample Mom brought.”
“It wasn't a wellness sample,” Rebecca said, her gaze unblinking. “It was the same industrial paralytic compound that nearly killed Theo two years ago. The exact compound your company was fined for covering up.”

The door behind Grant clicked open. Detective Miller stepped into the room, flanked by two uniformed officers, holding a digital tablet displaying Marcus’s forensic reports and financial ledger.
“Grant Sloan, you’re under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder and corporate negligence,” Detective Miller said, stepping forward with handcuffs ready.
