Chapter 10 - The Promise of Tomorrow

On a crisp winter evening, one year after the nightmare in the kitchen, Rebecca stood at the living room window watching the first snow crystals drift down over the frozen lake.

Theo sat on the floor beside Maya, who was now crawling clumsily across the rug, chasing a glowing toy rocket he had engineered for her.

The doorbell rang. Rebecca opened it to find Detective Miller standing on the porch, holding a small envelope.

“Just dropping off the final closure documents from the federal court, Mrs. Sloan,” Detective Miller said with a warm, respectful smile. “The corporate liquidation is complete. You and the children are entirely free.”

Rebecca accepted the envelope, her heart feeling lighter than it had in a decade. “Thank you, Detective. For everything.”

As he walked away into the falling snow, Rebecca closed the door and locked it securely behind him. She walked back into the living room, knelt beside her son and daughter, and wrapped her arms around them both.

The past was a locked room, but the future was wide open, bright, and entirely theirs.
