Chapter 7 - The Turning Point

The hidden door swung outward with a soft hiss of pneumatic pressure. Harper stepped out into the pantry, gripping the heavy crowbar with both hands. Her heart pounded a frantic rhythm in her ears as she crept toward the edge of the kitchen wall, peering cautiously into the living room.
The scene before her was a nightmare come to life.
Daniel was on his knees near the coffee table, a nasty gash bleeding freely from his left temple. Standing over him was a towering man in a sodden black raincoat, pointing a sleek, suppressed handgun directly at Daniel’s head. A second intruder was rummaging through the entertainment center, tossing family photo albums onto the floor.
“Last chance, Daniel,” the gunman growled, pressing the barrel of the gun harder against Daniel’s temple. “Where is Eli?”
“He’s safe,” Daniel whispered defiantly, spitting a drop of blood onto the carpet. “You’ll never touch him.”
Harper knew she only had one element of surprise, and she had to make it count. She raised the heavy iron crowbar, stepped out from the hallway shadows, and screamed at the top of her lungs.
“Hey!”
The gunman spun around instinctively, his eyes widening in shock as a pregnant woman charged at him with a weapon. Before he could raise his firearm to aim at her, Harper swung the crowbar with every ounce of adrenaline and maternal fury she possessed, catching the man squarely across his forearm.
The gun flew from his grip, clattering loudly across the hardwood floor and sliding underneath the sofa.
“What the—” the second intruder shouted, dropping the photo albums and lunging toward Harper.
Before he could reach her, Daniel surged upward from the floor with explosive strength, tackling the second man around the waist and driving him hard into the bookshelf. Books rained down on them in an avalanche of paper and dust as the two men wrestled violently on the floor.
The first intruder, nursing his bruised arm, glared at Harper with pure venom and lunged forward, grabbing her by the shoulders and shoving her hard against the wall.
Harper cried out as the impact knocked the wind from her lungs, her hands flying instinctively to protect her belly.
“You stupid bitch,” the man snarled, raising a fist to strike her.
Suddenly, the front door was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash.
“POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!”
Officer Miller, followed by a tactical unit of four heavily armed officers with assault rifles raised, flooded into the living room. Bright tactical flashlights cut through the dim interior, blinding everyone in the room.
“Don’t move! Hands where I can see them! On the ground, now!”

The two intruders froze instantly, realizing they were completely outmatched. Within seconds, both men were slammed face-first onto the floor, heavy zip-ties ratcheting tight around their wrists.
Harper slid down the wall, gasping for air as Officer Miller rushed over to her side, his face etched with genuine concern.
