Chapter 10 - The Family We Choose

The school bus yellow flashers blinked rhythmically at the curb of Elm Street, casting a bright amber glow across the front lawn.
Harper and Daniel stood side-by-side on the porch, holding hands tightly as little Eli adjusted his blue backpack over his shoulders. His dark hair was neatly combed, and a wide, proud grin stretched across his face. He looked every bit like a normal, happy nine-year-old boy heading off to a bright future.
“You ready, buddy?” Daniel asked, kneeling down to tie a loose shoelace on Eli’s sneakers.
“Ready, Dad,” Eli said, beaming proudly.
Hearing that word—Dad—no longer carried the weight of a guilty secret or a terrifying burden. It was said out in the open, spoken with absolute love and security.
Eli turned to Harper, wrapping his small arms tightly around her waist. “Thank you for keeping me safe, Aunt Harper.”
Harper knelt down, hugging the boy back fiercely. “Always, Eli. You’re part of this family now, forever and ever. Now go on, don’t keep the bus waiting!”
Eli nodded eagerly, turning and sprinting down the driveway toward the open bus doors, waving enthusiastically as he climbed aboard.
Harper and Daniel watched as the bus doors hissed shut and the vehicle pulled away down the street, its taillights fading into the warm autumn afternoon.
Daniel reached out, slipping his fingers between Harper’s. She leaned her head comfortably against his shoulder, feeling the gentle kick of their unborn baby stirring inside her—a joyful reminder of the new life they were building together.

The shadows of the past had finally been cleared away by the truth. They had survived the storm, and ahead of them lay a future filled with warmth, forgiveness, and unconditional love.
“Come on,” Harper whispered, smiling as she turned back toward the cozy, sunlit warmth of their home. “Let’s go home.”
