Chapter 6 - Awakening

By the following afternoon, Caleb had been transferred out of the intensive care unit and into a bright, private recovery room overlooking a courtyard filled with oak trees and blooming azaleas.

The afternoon sun streamed through the glass, casting warm golden patterns across the white bedsheets. Caleb stirred slowly, his eyelids fluttering open as he let out a soft yawn.

"Mom?" he rasped, his voice dry.

Mara was by his side instantly, pressing a cup of water with a bendable straw to his lips. "I'm right here, sweetheart. Take it slow."

Caleb sipped the water, then blinked around the room. Toby was sitting cross-legged in the visitor's chair, reading a comic book upside down. Standing near the window was Julian, holding a chart.

Caleb looked at Julian, then down at his own chest where the white hospital gown covered the faint surgical dressing. "Did the superhero fix my engine?"

Julian walked over, a gentle smile playing on his lips, and pulled up a chair beside Mara. "He sure did," Julian said softly. "Your heart is strong and healthy now, Caleb. No more collapsing during gym class."

Caleb grinned, looking pleased. "Can I play soccer now?"

"In a few weeks, once you're fully healed," Julian promised. "We'll take it step by step."

Toby hopped down from his chair and rushed to the side of the bed, holding up his green plastic dinosaur. "Greeny says you're brave."

Caleb took the dinosaur, setting it right beside his pillow. "Tell him thanks."

Mara looked up at Julian, her heart swelling with an emotion she hadn't expected to feel. The grief of the past five years hadn't vanished, but it had transformed. The ghost of Michael Rowan was no longer a haunting mystery; he was a living legacy sitting right here in the room, looking at her with the same gentle grey eyes.

"You should stay, Julian," Mara said quietly, the words slipping out before she could overthink them. "The boys... they want to know their uncle. And I think... I think we want to know you, too."

May you like

Julian looked at Mara, seeing the open invitation in her eyes, the walls of suspicion and pain finally dismantled. He reached out, his hand resting gently over hers on the edge of the mattress.

"I'd like that more than anything," Julian replied.
