Chapter 5 - The Longest Hours

The digital clock on the wall of the surgical waiting room read 9:15 AM.

Mara paced the length of the linoleum floor, her footsteps echoing in the quiet enclosure. Toby sat in a corner chair, coloring a picture of a superhero with crayons provided by a hospital volunteer, though his little eyes kept darting anxiously toward the double doors marked SURGERY IN PROGRESS.

Two hours had passed since Julian and his team had wheeled Caleb into the sterile operating suite. Two hours of complete silence from the medical staff. Every beep of a monitor Mara imagined in her head; every passing nurse in green scrubs made her heart leap into her throat.

At 9:45 AM, the double doors pushed open, and Dr. Evans stepped out into the hallway, still wearing his surgical cap and mask pulled down around his neck. He looked tired, but there was a faint, unmistakable trace of relief in his eyes.

Mara dropped her sketchbook and rushed forward, followed closely by Toby.

"Dr. Evans? How is he?" Mara demanded, grabbing the doctor's forearm.

Dr. Evans smiled warmly. "The repair was successful, Mara. Dr. Hart performed brilliantly. It was a delicate procedure—the congenital defect was more intricate than the initial scans showed, but Julian anticipated the exact branching of the artery and corrected it flawlessly. Caleb’s heart is beating on its own, strong and steady."

Mara let out a ragged breath, her knees nearly buckling under the sudden release of overwhelming tension. She sank against the wall, covering her face with her hands as tears of pure relief streamed down her cheeks.

"Can we see him?" Toby asked, tugging on Dr. Evans’ lab coat. "Can we see Caleb now?"

"Not quite yet, buddy," Dr. Evans said, patting Toby's head gently. "They're moving him into the pediatric intensive care unit for close observation over the next twenty-four hours. Dr. Hart will be out to speak with you as soon as he finishes closing up and debriefing the team."

True to his word, another forty-five minutes passed before Julian emerged through the doors. He looked exhausted, his hair damp with sweat and dark circles prominent beneath his grey eyes, but as he pulled off his surgical mask, a brilliant, tired smile broke across his face.

Mara walked straight toward him and, without a second thought, threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder.

Julian was momentarily startled, but then his arms came around her, holding her tightly against him. "He's going to be okay, Mara," Julian whispered against her hair. "His heart is strong. He's going to live a long, healthy life."

"Thank you, Julian," she sobbed softly. "Thank you for saving him."

Toby ran up and hugged Julian’s leg. "Is Caleb a superhero now?"

Julian knelt down, lifting Toby up so the boy was at eye level, and smiled. "No, buddy. Caleb is just a regular kid. But he’s got a very strong engine now. And so do you."
