Chapter 7 - The Visitor in Bay Four

August walked down the familiar corridor of the emergency department. The fluorescent lights no longer hummed with an agonizing frequency; they had been replaced with warm, balanced LED panels that made the entire wing feel bright, clean, and welcoming.

As she passed trauma bay four, she noticed the door was propped open.

Leaning against the stainless steel counter near the sink was Sebastian Marchetti. He wore a dark charcoal wool coat over a crisp black shirt. Though he still moved with a slight stiffness from his healing abdominal muscles, the gray pallor of trauma was entirely gone, replaced by the sharp, commanding presence that ruled the city's harbor front.

He turned his head as footsteps approached, and a faint, respectful smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"Nurse Wayne," Sebastian greeted her, his voice a low, gravelly baritone. "Or should I say, Vice President Wayne?"

August stopped in the doorway, crossing her arms lightly over her chest. "Nurse Wayne is fine, Mr. Marchetti. Titles don't change what happens at the foot of a gurney."

"True," Sebastian admitted, stepping forward slowly. He extended a hand toward her. "I wanted to thank you properly. In my line of work, people tend to look the other way when things get dangerous. You didn't look away."

August took his hand. Her grip was firm, steady, and entirely unafraid—the handshake of a true equal. "I didn't look away because a patient’s life isn't a business transaction, Mr. Marchetti. Whether you run the harbor or clean the streets, on this table, everyone is equal."

Sebastian’s smile widened into something genuine. "I suppose that’s why Solomon tells me you’re the most dangerous person in this hospital."

"Dangerous?" August raised an eyebrow.

"To corruption, yes," Sebastian replied, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "Word has already spread through the underground syndicates and corporate boardrooms alike: Marbury General is officially off-limits for anyone trying to cut corners or bury secrets. You’ve turned a charity hospital into an impenetrable fortress of integrity."

"I just wanted a place where people could heal without fear," August said softly, looking around the bright, immaculate trauma bay where she had fought for his life three weeks ago.

"Well, you’ve built more than that," Sebastian said, turning toward the window that looked out over the sunlit winter city. "You’ve built a precedent. And if anyone ever tries to tear it down, you know who to call."

August watched him for a moment, a subtle smile touching her lips. "I think Marbury General can handle its own security from now on, Mr. Marchetti. But I appreciate the offer."
