Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

By Wednesday afternoon, the Cross family mansion looked less like a symbol of elite wealth and more like a crime scene under siege. Police cruisers were parked haphazardly across the pristine cobblestone driveway, their red and blue emergency lights casting harsh reflections against the whitewashed neoclassical pillars.

Vivian Cross sat in the back of a police cruiser, her face pale, her designer silk blouse rumpled, and her wrists cuffed behind her back. She stared out the window in absolute disbelief, screaming curses at the two officers who had escorted her out of her own home.

“Do you know who I am?” she shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria. “My son is Daniel Cross! We own half the hotels in this city! You can't do this to me! It was just a bottle of cleaning spray!”

The officers ignored her completely, sliding the cruiser door shut and locking it.

Daniel arrived moments later, his car screeching to a halt on the gravel. He leaped out, slamming the door behind him, and sprinted toward the front steps where his mother was being led away.

“Mom! Mom, what is happening?” Daniel yelled, pushing past a uniformed officer who immediately blocked his path with a firm hand on his chest.

“Step back, sir. Interference with law enforcement is an arrestable offense,” the officer warned.

“I am her son! What is the charge?” Daniel demanded, his face contorted in panic.

“Aggravated assault with a chemical substance resulting in bodily harm,” the detective in charge replied coldly, stepping forward and flashing a badge. He looked Daniel up and down with undisguised contempt. “And Mr. Cross, you might want to call your own lawyer. Our investigation shows you were an active participant who restrained the victim during the attack. We’re securing a warrant for you as well.”

Daniel staggered backward, the breath knocked out of his lungs. An active participant. He realized with horror that the security camera footage from the smart doorbell hadn't been a secret; it had captured every single second of his cowardice and complicity.

While Daniel stood paralyzed in the driveway, his phone began to ring incessantly. It was his lead corporate attorney, followed by three different board members, followed by the chief financial officer. He answered the call from his attorney with a trembling hand.

“Daniel, where the hell are you?” the lawyer barked without greeting him. “The board just held an emergency vote. You’ve been stripped of your CEO title. Hartwell Capital has exercised its collateral rights and is initiating a hostile takeover of the entire corporation. By tomorrow morning, the Cross family will own exactly zero shares of our own company.”

“A hostile takeover?” Daniel whispered, his voice barely audible over the wind. “Who... who owns Hartwell Capital? Who is behind this?”

“Nobody knows the identity of the primary majority shareholder,” the lawyer snapped. “They operate through encrypted holding companies and family trusts. But whoever they are, they hate the Cross family with a vengeance. You’ve made an enemy of a titan, Daniel. Good luck finding a lawyer who will take your case.”

The line went dead.

Daniel dropped his phone onto the wet gravel. He looked up at the towering mansion that had once felt like an impregnable fortress, realizing that in less than forty-eight hours, every brick of it belonged to strangers.
