Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

Five years later, the autumn leaves were once again turning golden and amber, fluttering down onto the manicured lawns of the Hartwell estate.
Inside the sunlit nursery of our home, a cheerful little girl with bright, curious eyes and a head of soft curls was busy stacking wooden building blocks while chattering happily in a mixture of English and made-up toddler nonsense.
I sat on the plush rug beside her, laughing as she triumphantly placed the final block on top of a wobbly tower before gently knocking it down with a delighted squeal.
“Careful, Maya!” a warm voice chuckled from the doorway.
Julian walked into the nursery, carrying a tray with two cups of tea and a plate of freshly baked cinnamon scones. He set the tray down on the side table, dropped gracefully to the floor, and immediately scooped our two-year-old daughter into his arms, earning an explosion of giggles as he tickled her tummy.
I leaned back against the sofa, watching them with a heart overflowing with quiet joy.
Life had moved forward in ways I could never have anticipated. The Cross family name had faded into obscurity, a cautionary tale of arrogance, cruelty, and the inevitable collapse of those who build their lives on the suffering of others. Vivian Cross was still serving out the remainder of her sentence in a minimum-security facility, while Daniel had long since been released, drifting into a quiet, anonymous existence far away from the elite circles he had once fought so desperately to dominate.
As for me? I was the executive director of the city’s premier cultural foundation, a dedicated mother, a loving wife, and a woman who never needed to hide behind a false identity or a humble exterior ever again. I knew my own worth, my parents were enjoying a peaceful, well-earned retirement surrounded by family, and every morning brought a clear, beautiful, unobstructed view of the world.
Julian walked over after putting Maya down for her afternoon nap, sitting down beside me on the sofa and wrapping a warm arm around my shoulders. He pressed a gentle kiss to the top of my head.
“Penny for your thoughts, my brilliant historian?” he murmured softly.
I leaned into his embrace, looking over at our daughter sleeping peacefully in her crib, and then out the window at the bright, endless autumn sky.

“Just thinking,” I smiled, taking his hand and interlocking my fingers with his. “That we got our happily ever after.”
“And the best part,” Julian whispered, smiling warmly as he pulled me closer, “is that this story is only just beginning.”
