Chapter 8 - The Confrontation and the Truth
While paramedics carefully loaded Andrew onto a rescue helicopter stationed in a nearby clearing, Officer Natalie Vance took two tactical units and drove straight to the grand gated estate of Marcus Vance on the edge of town.
When Natalie pulled into the long driveway, Marcus was standing near his luxury SUV, packing leather luggage into the trunk. He looked up, his face paling as three police cruisers boxed his vehicle in.
"Officer Vance," Marcus said, trying to force a calm, sophisticated smile. "What is the meaning of this intrusion on private property?"
Natalie stepped out of her vehicle, her face a mask of cold sternness. "Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, felony abandonment, extortion, and obstruction of justice."
Marcus sneered, taking a step back. "That's absurd! On what grounds? You have no evidence of anything!"
Natalie drew her handcuffs. "We found Andrew's truck at Miller Creek, along with your tire tracks at the scene. We found your heavy boot prints tracking him up Blackwood Ridge. And most importantly, we found Andrew locked inside the old sawmill—a lock that bears your fingerprints."
Marcus’s composure shattered. "He was supposed to give up that land! He was broke! He couldn't even afford his kid's medical bills!"
"He survived four days in that mill because he loved his daughter more than life itself," Natalie said, stepping forward and clicking the handcuffs tightly around Marcus’s wrists. "And now you're going to spend the next twenty years behind bars thinking about what true strength really looks like."
As the officers loaded Marcus into the back of a police car, the neighborhood crowd that had previously judged Andrew gathered along the perimeter fence. The local news crew that had tried to film Ashley's rescue was now recording Marcus's arrest.

Natalie turned to the cameras and the watching crowd, her voice carrying clear and resonant:
"Andrew didn't abandon his child! He fought a hurricane, survived a terrible accident, and dragged himself through miles of wilderness to save his little girl! Remember that before you judge a loving father!"
