Chapter 5 - Echoes in the Intensive Care

Back at Saint Jude’s Hospital, the sun beamed through the high windows of the pediatric ward. Ashley had finally opened her eyes. Her delicate hand reached out, searching the sheets until her fingers brushed against the plush fur of Buddy the puppy.
Sitting in a chair beside her bed was Dispatcher Eric, who had finished his grueling twelve-hour shift and come straight to the hospital with a small gift box.
"Hi, Ashley," Eric said gently, offering a warm, reassuring smile. "I'm Eric. I was the guy on the phone last night."
Ashley’s eyes widened slightly behind her clear oxygen mask. "You... you stayed on the phone with me."
"I did," Eric smiled, opening the gift box to reveal a soft, hand-knitted blanket and a brand new storybook. "And I brought Buddy back to you, totally clean."
"Where is my daddy?" Ashley asked, her voice small, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "The lady next door said he left because I was sick and too hard to take care of."
Eric leaned forward, taking her tiny hand gently. "Listen to me very carefully, Ashley. That lady was wrong. Your daddy loves you more than anything in this world. He bought your medicine, he packed your food, and he fought through a terrible storm to get back to you. He never left you."
"Is he lost?" she whispered.
"He's lost right now," Eric said softly, "but Officer Natalie and the best rescue teams in the state are out there finding him right this second. He is coming back."
Ashley squeezed Eric's fingers tightly. "He left me a note. Did you see it?"
"I saw it," Eric nodded. "He wrote down everything you needed."
May you like
"No," Ashley said, shaking her head faintly. "Not that note. Underneath my pillow... he put a note before he walked out the door."
Eric froze. He immediately reached for his phone to dial Officer Natalie.
