Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the Past

Three years after the day my father struck me, I returned to the old family home one last time.

The bank had put the house up for auction to settle the remaining corporate debts left behind by Arthur Vance. Daniel and I went together to oversee the final removal of our childhood belongings before the property was handed over to the new owners.

Walking through the front door didn't bring back the terror it once did. The old, dark wooden paneling had been torn down during staging, and the sunlight poured in through large windows, washing away the oppressive shadows that used to fill every corner.

I walked into the living room, stopping at the exact spot where the birthday cake had fallen and where my father had raised my crutch over my head.

I stood there for a long moment, listening to the soft rustle of the wind outside.

Daniel walked up beside me, putting an arm around my shoulders. "Are you okay being here?"

"I am," I said truthfully. "I thought coming back here would make me feel small again. But standing here now... I realize this house was just wood and plaster. The power Dad had over us was only real because we were too young and scared to see through it."

"He was a bully," Daniel agreed. "And like all bullies, he collapsed the moment someone stood up to him."

We spent the afternoon packing up old photo albums. We threw away all the trophies and awards my father had used to display his ego, keeping only the pictures of our late mother and the few memories that reflected genuine warmth.

As we packed the last box, I found an old, dusty photograph of Daniel and me as kids, sitting on a tire swing in the backyard, laughing uncontrollably.

"Look at this," I said, showing it to Daniel.

Daniel smiled, his eyes softening. "I remember that day. Mom took that picture right before she got sick."

"We were happy then," I said.

"We're happy now, too," Daniel replied softly. "It took us a long time to get back here, but we made it."
