Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Lies

The discovery of the stolen settlement money changed everything. What had started as a domestic assault case expanded into a full forensic audit of Vance Enterprises and my father's personal finances.
Within two weeks, federal investigators were involved. The financial audit revealed years of embezzlement, tax fraud, and grand larceny committed by Arthur Vance. He hadn't just stolen my settlement; he had been skimming money from the company's pension funds and inflating revenue reports to keep stock prices high.
My father’s high-priced legal team quickly realized that defending him on the assault charges was the least of their worries. With the video evidence from Noah's tablet being virtually unassailable, the DA offered my father a plea bargain: ten years in state prison for aggravated assault and grand theft, with no option for early parole before serving seven years.
In exchange, my father would have to sign over all remaining assets to a trust managed for my benefit and return every dollar he had stolen from me, plus interest.
My father, stubborn to the end, initially refused. He demanded to stand trial, insisting that a jury of his peers would see that he was merely "a father disciplining his unruly child."
However, his own lawyers warned him that going to trial with the video evidence and the financial audit meant facing up to twenty-five years in maximum-security prison.
Meanwhile, Rachel’s defense fell apart completely. Desperate to avoid jail time, she agreed to plead guilty to assault and submit to a mandatory psychological evaluation, parenting classes, and two years of probation. In the divorce settlement, Daniel was granted sole physical custody of Noah, with Rachel receiving only supervised visitation rights once every two weeks.
One afternoon, while Daniel was at work and Noah was at school, I received a phone call from the county jail.
"You have a collect call from inmate Arthur Vance," the automated voice announced. "Do you accept the charges?"
My hand trembled as I pressed the button on my phone. "Yes."
"Clara," my father's voice came through the line. It was raspy, stripped of its former power, but still carried a sharp edge of bitterness. "Are you happy now? You've destroyed my company. You've ruined your brother's marriage. You've put your own father behind bars."
I took a deep breath, feeling the healing ribs beneath my brace. "I didn't destroy anything, Dad. You did. You built your entire life on violence, lies, and theft. You thought you could beat me into submission forever."
"I gave you a roof over your head!" he shouted into the receiver. "You were nothing without me!"

"You took my money, you broke my body, and you treated me like an object," I said calmly. "I'm not afraid of you anymore, Dad. Don't ever call me again."
I hung up the phone and blocked the number.
