Chapter 6 - Healing Wounds

The weeks following Claire’s arrest brought a strange, peaceful rhythm back into our daily lives. The legal proceedings moved forward steadily; with the robust paper trail David’s lawyer uncovered, Claire’s attempts to manipulate Elena’s estate unraveled completely. She faced multiple charges of fraud and forgery, her defense crumbling under the weight of undeniable documentation. We didn’t need to dwell on her courtroom appearances; her chapter in our lives was firmly closed, locked away like a bad dream.

At home, the transformation was remarkable. Without the constant walking on eggshells, our house finally felt like a home again. David took extended leave from his firm to spend meaningful afternoons with Liam, helping him with his homework, tossing a baseball in the backyard until the grass was damp with evening dew, and sitting together at the kitchen table to sketch designs for Liam's next batch of hospital crafts.

One evening in late May, as David and I sat on the back porch watching Liam chase our old golden retriever across the lawn, David broke a comfortable silence.

"Mom," he said, turning his coffee mug between his hands. "I've been thinking about what you said last month about letting go of the past."

"Oh?" I smiled, sipping my tea. "Did I say something wise for once?"

"You always do," he chuckled softly. "You told me that grief isn't something you pack away in a box or throw into a dumpster. It's something you carry until it lightens up enough to share." He looked out at Liam, who was currently laughing as the dog licked his face. "For a long time, I thought protecting Liam meant keeping everything frozen in time. Keeping Elena's sweaters locked away, keeping strangers out, keeping our pain hidden behind locked doors. I was wrong. Claire tried to force us to 'move on' by erasing her, but she didn't realize that true healing doesn't mean forgetting. It means remembering with love instead of pain."

I reached over, placing my hand over his. "You're a wonderful father, David. Elena would be so proud of how you brought your son back into the light."

"We did it together, Mom," he replied softly. "You never gave up on us, even when I was too blind to see what was happening right under my nose."

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of deep amber and lavender—the exact colors of the yarn Liam used for his very first bunny. We sat there in the fading twilight, listening to the crickets and the distant sound of our boy’s joyful laughter, knowing that the hardest part of our journey was safely behind us.
