Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Nursery

The air in the nursery felt heavy, charged with the sudden violence of a truth long buried. Sophie’s chest rose and fell in shallow, panicked breaths. She looked from Celeste to Daniel, her eyes wide with terror as the immaculate picture of her domestic life began to fracture.

“David?” Sophie’s voice trembled, her hands tightening protectively around the baby. “What is she talking about? Who is this woman?”

“Sophie, please, sit down,” Daniel stammered, taking a hesitant step toward her. His hands hovered awkwardly in the air, stripped of their usual calm authority. “It’s... it’s not what it looks like.”

“Not what it looks like?” I let out a dry, humorless laugh. “He’s standing here alive, sharing a home and a child with you, while I spent half a decade wearing black and mourning a ghost. Do not insult her intelligence, Daniel. You’ve had five years to practice your lies; surely you can come up with something better than a cliché.”

Celeste stepped between Daniel and Sophie, her posture rigid. Her eyes, usually cold and calculating, flashed with genuine panic. She had spent a fortune protecting this illusion, shielding her precious son from the legal fallout of his financial crimes by staging an elaborate vanishing act.

“Elena, lower your voice. There’s a baby sleeping,” Celeste hissed, stepping close to me. She tried to use her old intimidating stature, but the power dynamic had shattered the moment I walked through that door. “You always were selfish. You care nothing for the destruction you’re about to cause.”

“Destruction?” I stared at her, my blood running cold with fury. “You buried an empty box. You watched me cry over wood and dirt. You let creditors strip me of everything I owned while you orchestrated this grand escape. You talk to me about destruction?”

Sophie looked ready to faint. The newborn stirred, letting out a soft, whimpering cry. “Tell me the truth,” Sophie whispered, tears spilling over her lashes. “David... who is she?”

Daniel closed his eyes, his shoulders slumping under the weight of inevitability. The illusion was gone. The fortress built on lies had finally crumbled from the inside out.

“She’s my wife,” Daniel said softly, the words tasting like ash in his mouth.

Sophie gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth. The baby began to cry in earnest, mirroring the shock in the room.

“Your wife,” Sophie repeated numbly. “We’ve been married for two years. We have a son.”

“And I was legally dead,” Daniel said, his voice cracking. “I didn’t have a choice.”

“Everyone has a choice,” I said, picking up my phone from the dresser. The bluff had done its job, buying me the crucial seconds I needed. “And now, you’re going to make another one. You’re going to tell us everything—starting with who helped you fake your death.”
