Chapter 10 - A Happy Ending

Two years after that extraordinary day in Sophie’s nursery, I stood on the deck of a coastal cabin just north of the city, watching the sunset paint the Pacific Ocean in brilliant shades of violet and gold.
The air smelled of salt and pine. Inside the warm, timber-framed cabin, music played softly, and the laughter of close friends drifted through the open French doors.
Marcus stepped up behind me, wrapping his arms gently around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder. He pressed a warm kiss to my temple.
“Penny for your thoughts, investigator,” he murmured playfully.
I leaned back into his embrace, feeling the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. “Just thinking about how far I’ve come.”
“Do you regret any of it?” Marcus asked softly, turning me around so I could look into his eyes. “The pain, the investigation, the wreckage?”
I reached up, tracing the gentle line of his jaw—not a scar from deceit, but a mark of a man who had nothing to hide.
“Not a single second,” I said with complete honesty. “If I hadn't walked into that nursery, if I hadn't discovered the lie, I would still be living in someone else’s shadow, mourning a ghost who never truly existed. That day didn't destroy my life, Marcus. It gave it back to me.”
Downstairs on the beach, Sophie and her son were collecting seashells along the shore, their bright laughter carrying across the waves. They were part of our extended family now—a circle built on absolute truth, resilience, and unwavering support.

My phone rested quietly on the table inside, silenced for the weekend. There were no hidden accounts to track, no federal conspiracies to untangle, and no empty boxes to bury. There was only the present moment, bright and unyielding.
Marcus smiled, kissing me deeply as the sun dipped below the horizon, sealing the end of my dark chapter and the beginning of a truly happy, authentic life.
