Chapter 8 - The Seventh Birthday

Forty-eight hours after the night at Pier 42, the sun broke through the grey winter clouds over Holden Cross’s estate, casting a warm, brilliant golden light across the snow-covered lawn of the eastern courtyard.
The atmosphere in the grand mansion was completely transformed. The cold, sterile fortress that had once struck terror into the hearts of underground rivals was now filled with the warm scent of freshly baked vanilla cake, hot cocoa, and pine wood burning in the massive stone hearth.
Inside the grand living room, a long oak table was decorated with bright yellow balloons, colorful streamers, and wrapped gift boxes.
Lily sat at the head of the table wearing a bright blue woolen dress, her cheeks full and rosy, her dark hair neatly brushed and tied with a silk ribbon. For the first time since she had arrived at the compound, the haunting look of fear in her eyes had been replaced by genuine, childlike joy.
Beside her chair sat Phantom—or Barnaby, as everyone in the household now called him. The massive Cane Corso wore a comical, oversized red party hat tilted slightly between his folded ears. He sat with noble dignity, his tail thumping rhythmically against the hardwood floor every time Lily reached down to pat his head.
Holden stood near the fireplace, wearing a relaxed cashmere sweater instead of his usual tailored suits, holding a warm cup of coffee as he watched the scene unfold. Frank and several members of the estate staff stood nearby, smiling broadly as Lily blew out seven brightly burning candles on her birthday cake.
"Happy birthday, Lily," Holden said softly, walking over to the table and placing a small, velvet-wrapped box in front of her.
Lily looked up at Holden with wide, curious eyes. "What is it, Mr. Cross?"
"Open it," Holden smiled.
Lily carefully unwrapped the velvet box and lifted the lid. Inside lay a polished gold medallion attached to a soft leather collar, engraved with elegant lettering:
BARNABY VANCE - PROTECTOR OF LILY
HOME: CROSS ESTATE
Lily lifted the medallion, her fingers tracing the shiny letters. Tears welled up in her eyes, but this time they were tears of pure happiness. She looked up at Holden, her voice small and filled with emotion. "Does this mean... does this mean Barnaby and I can stay here forever?"
Holden knelt beside her chair, looking directly into her eyes with a warmth he hadn't shown to another human being in decades.
"The court officially finalized your guardianship paperwork this morning, Lily," Holden said softly. "Your father’s estate is fully restored, and it belongs to you. But until you're grown up, this house is your home. You and Barnaby never have to run, hide, or be afraid ever again."
May you like
Lily threw her small arms around Holden’s neck, hugging him tightly. Holden froze for a brief second in surprise before relaxing, gently wrapping his arms around her frail shoulders, holding her safe against his chest.
Barnaby let out a loud, joyous bark that shook the living room, leaning his massive black head against both of them, resting his snout right on Holden’s shoulder. Frank and the staff erupted into warm applause, their laughter filling the high-ceilinged room that had been quiet for far too long.
