Chapter 7 - Justice Restored

The gunshot echoed like a cannon shot inside the enclosed warehouse.

At the exact moment Victor pulled the trigger, Holden fired a single, precise shot from his own sidearm from the catwalk above. The high-caliber round struck Victor’s handgun dead center, shattering the weapon into metallic fragments and knocking Victor off his feet before his bullet could leave the barrel.

Victor collapsed against the metal door, screaming in pain as his hand throbbed from the violent impact. His shattered pistol clattered uselessly onto the wet concrete.

Phantom didn't stop. He closed the remaining distance in two powerful strides, planting his massive front paws directly onto Victor’s chest, pinning the trembling billionaire against the wall with overwhelming force. Phantom lowered his massive head until his jaw was mere inches from Victor’s throat. The dog’s hot, heavy breath washed over Victor’s pale, sweat-slicked face, accompanied by a low, continuous growl that vibrated through Victor’s ribs.

"Please... please don't!" Victor sobbed, his refined composure completely shattered as he looked into the amber eyes of his brother's hound. "Don't let him kill me! I'll pay you whatever you want! Millions!"

Holden walked down the metal stairs, his heavy boots making slow, rhythmic thuds against the steel treads. He stepped up beside Phantom, looking down at the broken man pinned beneath the beast.

"You really don't remember him, do you, Victor?" Holden asked softly, leaning down.

Victor blinked through his tears, looking at the dog's scarred snout and massive frame. "What... what are you talking about?"

"This isn't just a guard dog I bought off the market," Holden said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "This is Barnaby. The pup you took from Julian’s house after you set the fire. The dog you tried to erase because he was a living reminder of the family you murdered."

Victor’s eyes widened in horror as recognition finally broke through his panic. "No... that's impossible... he was sold to a breeder in Europe... he was supposed to be gone..."

"He came back," Holden said coldly. "And so did Lily."

At the mention of Lily’s name, Phantom let out an explosive, deafening bark right into Victor’s face. Victor shrieked, covering his head with his hands, weeping uncontrollably as all his arrogance drained away.

Holden reached into his coat and pulled out a heavy pair of steel zip-ties, throwing them down onto Victor’s lap. "Hold your hands out."

Ten minutes later, the heavy warehouse doors were pulled open from the outside. Federal agents and city police officers, alerted by Holden’s legal team who had delivered a massive dossier of financial corruption, kidnapping, and arson evidence hours earlier, flooded into the building with flashing red and blue lights.

As the federal agents dragged a sobbing Victor Vance out into the rain in handcuffs, Holden stood by his SUV, watching the arrest with silent satisfaction.

Frank walked up beside Holden, holding a digital tablet. "The federal prosecutors just seized all of Vance Applied Logistics' assets. The court has already appointed an independent legal guardian panel—approved by Julian Vance’s original estate lawyers—to oversee the trust until Lily comes of age. Victor is going away for the rest of his natural life."

Holden nodded slowly, watching the police cruisers pull away into the fog.

Phantom stood beside Holden, his dark coat soaked with rain, his ears raised as he watched the sirens fade in the distance. The heavy burden of violence that had hung over the dog for two long years seemed to melt away into the night air. He was no longer a weapon built for crime lords; he was a protector who had fulfilled his purpose.

Holden reached down and rested his hand on Phantom’s broad head. The dog leaned his heavy body slightly against Holden’s leg, giving a soft, contented sigh.

"Come on, Barnaby," Holden said gently, opening the rear door of the warm SUV. "Let's go home. Someone is waiting for us."
