Chapter 5 - The Security Footage

The silence in the foyer was absolute.
Claire’s mouth opened, but no words came out. The pristine, untouchable mask she had spent a lifetime crafting began to crack down the center, revealing the desperate, calculating fraud underneath. She looked at Grant, expecting him to dismiss his son’s words as the imaginative ramblings of a grieving six-year-old.
Instead, Grant was staring at her with a look that made her blood run cold. It was the look of a ruthless corporate titan who had just discovered a fatal flaw in a hostile takeover attempt.
“Evelyn,” Grant said, his voice unnaturally calm.
“Yes, Mr. Mercer?” the house manager stepped forward immediately.
“Pull up the foyer and hallway security feeds for Tuesday morning and yesterday afternoon. Cast it to the media wall in the study right now.”
“Right away, sir.” Evelyn didn’t even try to hide the fierce, vindictive satisfaction in her eyes as she turned and marched toward the security terminal.
“Grant, you can’t possibly believe a child’s tantrum over high-tech surveillance theater!” Claire stammered, her voice pitching up into a shrill register that she had never used in front of him before. “This is absurd! They are conspiring against me because they know I’m going to be their stepmother!”
“Shut up, Claire,” Grant said. Three words. Quiet, flat, and absolute.
Five minutes later, everyone—including the two police officers—stood crowded inside Grant’s expansive home study. Evelyn tapped the master keyboard, and the massive eighty-inch screen on the wall flickered to life.
The first video played Tuesday morning’s scene with crystal-clear high-definition clarity.
On screen, Ben knocked over the blue bowl. It shattered. Ben ran upstairs in panic. Then, the camera angle shifted from the hallway to the foyer threshold. Claire walked in. She looked at the broken pieces, laughed out loud—the audio picked up the crisp, malicious sound clearly—and then deliberately picked up a shard, walked over to Lily, and pointed her finger with a practiced look of outrage.
Claire stumbled backward until the back of her knees hit the mahogany bookshelf. “That... that’s edited. That’s a deepfake or something!”
“Shut up,” Grant repeated, his eyes never leaving the screen.
Evelyn fast-forwarded to yesterday afternoon, focusing on the mudroom bench where Natalie’s canvas bag sat.
The video showed Claire walking down the back corridor, looking around stealthily to ensure no one was watching. She pulled the diamond brooch from her robe pocket, unzipped the side pocket of Natalie’s canvas tote bag, dropped the brooch inside, and zipped it back up. She even patted the bag with a sickeningly sweet smile before walking away.
The room was so quiet that the hum of the computer fan sounded like a jet engine.
Officer Miller slowly closed his notebook and slipped it into his breast pocket. He turned to his partner. “Officer, confiscate the stolen property from the bag as evidence, and place Miss Whitmore under arrest for filing a false police report, attempted framing, and grand larceny fabrication.”

“No! You can’t do this to me! My family owns half of Fairfield County!” Claire shrieked as the second officer stepped forward and placed cold steel handcuffs around her slender, manicured wrists. She thrashed and clawed as they dragged her past the mahogany desk, screaming Grant’s name like a dying animal.
Grant didn’t even blink as the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind them, taking the sirens and the flashing blue lights away into the rainy night.
