Chapter 8 - The Truth Exposed

By 2:00 AM, the Wakefield mansion was flooded with flashing red and blue lights. Police officers, forensic investigators, and paramedics filled the halls.

Victoria Sterling, handcuffed and wrapped in a standard police blanket, her face bruised from the crash and her white gown stained with mud and blood, was led out of the front doors. She glared at Julia with pure, unadulterated hatred as she was shoved into the back of a police cruiser.

A specialized medical team immediately took over Luna’s care. Julia refused to leave the child’s side as they loaded her into an ambulance to transfer her to the city’s top pediatric hospital.

“I’m going with her,” Julia told the paramedics firmly.

“Are you family?” the paramedic asked.

Before Julia could answer, a frantic, breathless voice shouted from the driveway.

“Luna! Luna!”

It was Richard. Marcus had managed to contact his security detail, and Richard had boarded his private jet back to the city the minute he heard the news, arriving in a state of absolute terror and desperation.

He ran to the back of the ambulance, his suit jacket soaked with rain, his hair wild. He looked at his daughter, who was hooked up to a clean oxygen mask, looking small but completely conscious.

“Daddy,” Luna whispered, reaching out a weak hand.

Richard fell to his knees by the ambulance doors, grasping her hand, tears streaming down his face. “Oh my god, Luna... I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.”

Thomas walked up behind Richard, placing a comforting hand on his employer’s trembling shoulder. “Sir, if it wasn't for Julia, Luna wouldn't be here tonight. Miss Sterling was poisoning her. Julia found the evidence, recorded the confession, and saved your daughter’s life.”

Richard looked up at Julia, who was sitting inside the ambulance beside Luna. His eyes were wide with a mixture of profound shock, horror at what he had allowed into his home, and an overwhelming, crushing wave of gratitude.

“You... you saved her,” Richard choked out, his voice thick with emotion.

“She is going to be okay, Richard,” Julia said softly, giving him a gentle, reassuring smile. “The doctors know exactly what toxin was used now. They have the antidote. The lie is over.”
