Chapter 6 - Descent into the Shadows

By 3:00 PM, the storm outside had intensified, lashing sheets of heavy rain against the reinforced glass windows of St. Catherine Memorial Hospital. Inside Suite A, Leo continued to sleep peacefully in his incubator, his breathing steady and strong.

Rachel stood by the window, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, staring out into the gray abyss of the Chicago skyline. The revelation had changed everything, but the danger had only multiplied. If Mateo failed to find Tommy alive, or if Vincent Rossi managed to slip away before being captured, Rachel knew she would be swept away along with the wreckage of the Russo empire.

The door clicked open, and Mateo entered, dripping wet from the rain. Behind him, two massive security guards shoved a disheveled, terrified man into the center of the room.

It was Vincent Rossi. His expensive Italian suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his face twisted in sheer panic.

"Daniel! What is the meaning of this?" Rossi cried out, stumbling forward before catching his balance against the edge of a steel table. "Why did your men pull me out of the boardroom at gunpoint? I've been managing your ledgers for a decade—"

Before Rossi could finish his sentence, Daniel stepped out from the private washroom attached to the suite. He moved with the terrifying grace of a predator closing in on its prey.

Daniel didn't yell. He didn't make a grand speech. He walked up to Rossi, grabbed him by the lapels of his expensive suit with one hand, and slammed him against the concrete wall with enough force to rattle the medical trays across the room.

"You used my signature to launder six million dollars through the South Chicago docks," Daniel said, his voice a low, lethal whisper that echoed off the sterile walls. "You framed a civilian, and you used my organization to execute an innocent man to cover your tracks."

Rossi’s face turned the color of curdled milk. He gasped for air, his hands clawing weakly at Daniel's wrists. "It's a lie! That nurse—she hacked the system, she's trying to save her brother—"

"Quiet," Daniel snapped, tightening his grip until Rossi's toes barely grazed the floor.

At a nod from Daniel, the door opened wider. Two more guards walked in, supporting a bruised, exhausted young man between them.

"Tommy!" Rachel cried out, rushing forward.

"Rach?" Tommy mumbled, his lip split and his eyes wide with terror as he looked around the high-security luxury suite surrounded by armed mafia enforcers. "Where... where are we? Are we dead?"

"You're alive, you idiot," Rachel whispered fiercely, throwing her arms around his neck and pulling him close, checking him over for major injuries.

Daniel released Rossi, letting the cowering CFO slump to the floor in a heap of expensive fabric. Daniel turned his cold, piercing gaze toward Tommy, then back to Rossi, who was now trembling uncontrollably on the linoleum.

"Rossi," Daniel said, his voice echoing in the silent room. "You thought you could use my name as a shield while you robbed my company from the inside out. You thought I was too distracted by my wife's death and my son's illness to notice."

"Daniel, please—" Rossi wept, crawling toward the billionaire's shoes. "We can make a deal, I have offshore accounts, I can give you—"

"You've given me everything I need," Daniel interrupted coldly. He looked at Mateo. "Take him down to the freight yards. Lock him in the primary container depot until morning, then hand him and all the digital evidence over to the federal task force investigating corporate corruption in Illinois. Let the law do what it does best to traitors."

Rossi's face went completely blank with horror. In the underworld Daniel Russo ruled, handing an associate over to the federal authorities was a fate far worse than a quick bullet to the head. It meant a lifetime in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.

Mateo and the guards hauled the screaming, thrashing CFO out of the room, their heavy boots echoing down the corridor until the door clicked shut.
