Chapter 4 - The Hidden Ledger

Back in Suite A, the digital readout glowed a steady green. Leo was sleeping soundly, completely unaware of the deadly game being played around him.
Rachel washed her hands at the sink, her mind racing at lightning speed. If Mateo was searching her apartment, going back home was a death sentence. Her only shelter was this fortress. But staying here meant playing a dangerous game of espionage right under the nose of a mafia boss who could smell deception from a mile away.
At 11:30 AM, the heavy doors swung open. Daniel Russo walked in. He had changed into a tailored black three-piece suit for Camille's memorial. The stark black fabric accentuated the sharp, unforgiving lines of his jaw and the dark, icy depths of his eyes.
He walked straight to the incubator, looking down at his son with a gaze so fiercely protective it bordered on terrifying.
"He's calm," Daniel noted, glancing up at Rachel. "You haven't left this room, have you?"
"I took a brief twenty-minute break for coffee downstairs, Mr. Russo, per the charge nurse's permission," Rachel said evenly, keeping her voice completely devoid of emotion. "Otherwise, I have been right here."
Daniel studied her face for a long, tense moment. His sharp gaze seemed to peel back her layers, searching for any sign of deceit. "Good. My men tell me security on this floor is airtight. Nothing gets in or out without my personal sign-off."
"Speaking of security, Mr. Russo," Rachel said, taking a calculated risk that could either save her or get her killed on the spot. "The medical monitoring system in this suite is outdated. Dr. Harrison wants to upgrade the central server data logs to a cloud-based system so he can monitor Leo's vitals from his office downstairs. But the network port in this room is locked behind your private digital firewall."
Daniel narrowed his eyes slightly. "Dr. Harrison didn't mention an upgrade to me."
"He planned to bring it up during your afternoon briefing," Rachel lied smoothly, maintaining direct eye contact. "If you want me to be able to monitor Leo's sudden heart-rate spikes while you're away at your meetings, I need temporary administrative access to the room's terminal."
Daniel stared at her for another agonizing heartbeat. Then, without a word, he walked over to the sleek wall-mounted terminal beside the incubator, tapped a rapid twelve-digit biometric override code into the keypad, and swiped his signet ring across the optical scanner.
"Access granted for the nurse terminal only," Daniel said coldly. "Any attempt to breach the primary Russo logistics network through this port will trigger an alarm that locks every door in this building before my men put a bullet through the glass."
"Understood, Mr. Russo," Rachel said, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
As Daniel turned away to check his phone, Rachel quickly sat down at the terminal. Instead of downloading medical software, her fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing the hospital's public network and tunneling directly into the unsecured diagnostic port Daniel had just unlocked.
Her goal wasn't medical records. It was the logistics server Mateo had mentioned downstairs—the financial database tracking the Russo organization's money laundering fronts and debt collections.
Lines of encrypted data cascaded down the screen in a blur of green text. Rachel's breath hitched as she typed a rapid search query: THOMAS JENKINS / DEBT LEDGER / SOUTH CHICAGO.
A secure file popped up instantly on the screen.
Rachel’s eyes scanned the rows of data with mounting horror. It wasn't just a simple gambling debt. Tommy had been framed. The Russo organization's chief financial officer, a man named Vincent Rossi, had been using Tommy's construction company name to funnel millions of dollars in illegal kickbacks without Tommy's knowledge. When Tommy discovered the discrepancy and threatened to go to the federal authorities, Rossi had fabricated the gambling debt to silence him permanently.
And Daniel Russo had signed the execution order believing it was standard mafia business.
Before Rachel could download the encryption keys to a hidden partition on her temporary profile, the screen flickered. A warning dialog box popped up in flashing red letters:
WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED EXTERNAL DATA EXTRACTION DETECTED. TRACING IP ADDRESS...

"What are you doing?"
Daniel’s voice cracked like a whip right behind her ear.
