Chapter 7 - The Gathering at the Gate

The summer sun beat down on the cobblestone courtyard of the Romano estate, turning the ancient stones warm to the touch. It had been nearly a year since Lily Brooks walked through the iron gates with a wooden basin and a handful of rosemary, changing the trajectory of a family that had been frozen in grief.
Inside the grand dining room, long tables draped in pristine white linen were set with polished silver and crystal glassware. Bouquets of fresh lavender, white roses, and cascading ivy adorned the centerpieces—all gathered directly from the estate’s flourishing southern gardens.
For the first time since Elena’s passing, the Romano mansion was preparing to host a gathering.
Alessandro stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his study, adjusting the cuffs of his crisp white shirt. Through the glass, he watched the steady stream of luxury vehicles beginning to wind their way up the private driveway. Business associates, political figures, regional directors of Romano Maritime, and old family friends were arriving to attend the annual summer charity gala—an event Alessandro had canceled for three consecutive years following his wife's death.
There was a soft knock at the door, and Ethan walked into the room.
He didn't use the wheelchair. He didn't even use his forearm crutches. Though his steps were still measured and required intense concentration, he walked independently, his small hands clenched slightly at his sides as he balanced himself across the Persian rug.
"Dad," Ethan said, a proud smile lighting up his face. "Walter says the first guests are pulling up to the fountain."
Alessandro turned away from the window, his chest swelling with an emotion so fierce and bright it felt entirely new. He walked over and knelt down to look his son eye-to-eye, adjusting the collar of Ethan’s miniature blazer.
"Let them come," Alessandro said, his voice thick with pride. "Are you ready?"
"Ready," Ethan nodded firmly. "Lily is downstairs helping with the flower arrangements near the entrance. She told me if I trip over my own feet, I just have to get back up like a weed stubborn enough to crack concrete."
Alessandro let out a deep, booming laugh—a sound that hadn't been heard in these halls for years.
"She sounds remarkably like your mother," Alessandro smiled, standing up and offering his hand to his son. "Come on. Let's go show them what living looks like."
As father and son descended the grand staircase together, the murmurs of the crowded foyer below quieted instantly. Dozens of high-powered executives, politicians, and socialites turned toward the steps, expecting to see the cold, unyielding billionaire who ruled his empire with an iron fist.
Instead, they saw Alessandro Romano walking down the stairs side-by-side with his son, whose head was held high, walking under his own power for the first time in public.
A stunned silence fell over the room. Several older investors who had known Alessandro for decades stared in absolute disbelief.
At the base of the stairs stood Lily. She wore a simple, elegant emerald-green dress that matched the color of the summer foliage outside, her chestnut hair pinned up with a silver hairpin shaped like an oak leaf. She caught Alessandro’s eye and gave him a subtle, encouraging nod.
Alessandro raised his glass of sparkling water as he reached the bottom step, addressing the hushed assembly.

"Thank you all for coming tonight," Alessandro’s deep, resonant voice echoed effortlessly through the high-ceilinged hall. "For a long time, this house was a place that remembered only the winter. But tonight, we celebrate the season of growth. To new beginnings, and to the strength that comes from letting the light back in."
A wave of applause broke out across the room, led enthusiastically by Walter Pike near the doorway. Glasses clinked, and the warm hum of conversation and laughter filled the mansion once more, washing away the last ghosts of the past.
