Chapter 10 - The Evergreen Promise

Ten years later, the Romano estate looked less like a fortified mansion and more like a vibrant, welcoming sanctuary.

The iron gates at the main entrance were no longer locked behind heavy chains; they stood open wide, welcoming visitors, scholars, and neighborhood children who came to attend the annual Westchester Horticultural Exhibition hosted on the grounds.

Inside the grand study, Alessandro Romano sat at his mahogany desk, though the heavy ledgers of old shipping routes had long since been joined by architectural blueprints for community parks and green-space initiatives across New York City.

At twenty-eight, Ethan Romano was no longer the fragile, withdrawn boy trapped in a wheelchair. Standing tall and strong against the floor-to-ceiling window, he was reviewing patient recovery statistics for a major pediatric rehabilitation foundation that he now co-managed alongside leading neurological specialists. His legs, though carrying the faint scars of years past, supported him with firm, unyielding resolve.

The heavy oak door swung open without a knock, and Lily stepped into the room.

Though a few silver threads now mingled with her chestnut hair, her eyes retained the same calm, grounded warmth that had first captivated the billionaire a decade ago. She wore a simple linen dress, and around her neck, the silver leaf pendant caught the afternoon light.

"The greenhouse committee is waiting for you downstairs, Mr. Romano," Lily said with a playful smile. "They want your final approval on the winter jasmine layout for the north courtyard."

Alessandro stood up, buttoning his suit jacket with an easy grace. He walked around the desk, stopping just inches from her, and wrapped his arms securely around her waist.

"Let them wait," Alessandro murmured, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. "I'm busy with the most important gardener in New York."

Lily laughed softly, resting her hands against his chest. "You used to call me an unauthorized variable."

"The best variable of my life," Alessandro corrected her, smiling down into her eyes.

From the doorway, Ethan cleared his throat playfully, leaning against the doorframe with a confident grin and a thick leather portfolio under his arm.

"Dad, Mom—if you two are done being romantic, the regional directors are downstairs, and I am not running the logistics meeting by myself today."

Alessandro and Lily broke apart, sharing an amused glance before bursting into laughter.

As the three of them walked down the grand staircase together—side by side, steady and unafraid—the afternoon sun streamed through the stained-glass windows, casting a brilliant, golden glow across the entire foyer. Outside, the evergreen trees stood tall and thick against the changing season, their roots deep, strong, and enduring, ready for whatever winter might ever try to bring.
