Chapter 9 - The Question on the Terrace

The gala ended at midnight.

After driving back to the estate, the house was once again filled with quiet, peaceful stillness. Lily had fallen asleep in the back seat of the limousine and had been tucked into her bed, fast asleep with Barnaby the dog curled at the foot of her mattress.

Daniel walked out onto the grand stone terrace overlooking the dark expanse of Lake Michigan. The spring air was crisp and fresh, carrying the scent of blooming lilacs from the garden below.

He heard the soft sound of heels on stone behind him. Grace walked out onto the terrace, wrapped in a cream-colored cashmere shawl over her gown.

"Is Lily out?" Daniel asked, turning to face her.

"Sound asleep," Grace said with a faint laugh. "She tried to tell me she wasn't tired, then closed her eyes mid-sentence."

She walked over to the stone balustrade and leaned against it, looking out at the dark lake.

"You were incredible tonight, Daniel," she said softly. "The way you handled Marcus... the way you spoke to the press. You were so calm."

"I used to think being calm was just a business tactic," Daniel said, stepping closer to her. "A way to keep control. But tonight, I realized something else."

Grace looked up at him, the soft moonlight catching the curves of her face. "What's that?"

"I was calm because I knew what actually mattered," Daniel said. He reached out and gently took her hand. Grace didn't pull away. She leaned into his touch. "A year ago, if someone had threatened my company, I would have burned with rage for weeks. I lived for work, Grace. I lived for the deal, the tower, the money. Because I had nothing else."

Daniel looked down at her hand in his, then up into her warm brown eyes.

"When I walked into that laundry room six months ago and saw Lily scrubbing my shirt... I thought my life was completely fine. I thought I had everything. But the truth was, I was dying in this giant, empty house. You and Lily... you saved me, Grace. You brought light into a place that was dark for thirty years."

Grace’s eyes shone with unshed tears. She raised her free hand and gently rested her palm against Daniel’s cheek, her thumb brushing over his cheekbone.

"You saved us first, Daniel," she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "You saw a sick maid and a terrified little girl, and instead of throwing us away, you held us up. You gave me back my life. You gave Lily a future."

"I don't just want to give you a future, Grace," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a husky, intense whisper. "I want to share it with you. I love you, Grace. I've loved you since the day I realized I would burn down my own empire just to keep you safe."

Grace let out a soft, breathy laugh, a tear spilling over her lashes. "I love you too, Daniel. I think I've loved you since the moment you put your suit jacket around my daughter."

Daniel closed the distance between them and pulled her into his arms. When his lips met hers, it wasn't cold, calculated, or rushed. It was soft, deep, and filled with a lifetime of promised devotion. The cold wind off Lake Michigan blew around them, but neither of them felt it.
