Chapter 10 - The Unstained Life

Two years later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the lush green lawns of the Cole Estate.
The grand gardens, which had once been strictly manicured and off-limits, were now filled with life. A massive wooden playground set—complete with swings, two slides, and a tiny fort—stood proudly near the oak trees.
On the patio, long tables were set up under white linen canopies, covered in flowers, delicious food, and laughter. Over fifty guests—friends, charity board members, workers from the River North Tower, and local families—were gathered to celebrate.
It was Lily’s sixth birthday, but it was also something much bigger.
Inside the mansion’s sunroom, Daniel stood in front of a mirror, adjusting his tie. He was wearing a dark grey suit, but his lapel was pinned with a small, handmade paper flower that Lily had made for him that morning.
A light knock came at the door, and the door swung open.
Lily stood there, wearing a bright yellow sundress, her curls bouncing around her shoulders. She was holding the hand of a little boy—a two-year-old with dark hair and bright blue eyes who was wobbling on his feet, trying to keep up with her.
"Daddy!" Lily shouted happily. "Mama says it's time to cut the cake!"
Daniel turned around, and a massive smile lit up his face.
Daddy.
It was a title he had officially received eighteen months ago, when he and Grace were married in a quiet, beautiful ceremony right here in the estate gardens, followed by Daniel legally adopting Lily as his own daughter. And a year later, their son, Leo, had arrived into the world.
"Is the cake ready, bug?" Daniel asked, walking over and scooping tiny Leo into his left arm while taking Lily’s hand with his right.
"Yes! And Barnaby tried to eat a strawberry, but Mama caught him!" Lily giggled.
Daniel laughed and walked out onto the sun-drenched patio.
Grace was standing near the birthday cake, wearing a light floral summer dress. She looked stunning, healthy, and radiant. When she saw Daniel coming out with the children, her eyes lit up with that same deep, enduring love that had rebuilt Daniel’s world from the ground up.
Daniel walked up to her, kissed her tenderly on the lips, and set little Leo down on the grass, where the toddler immediately toddled off to play with the golden retriever.
"Everything perfect out here?" Daniel asked, pulling Grace close by her waist.
"Everything is perfect," Grace agreed, resting her head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart.
Daniel looked out across the lawn. He saw children playing on the swings, people laughing, music playing softly in the breeze, and his daughter blowing out the candles on her cake while everyone cheered.
He remembered the cold autumn night two years ago. He remembered the cold water, the dark laundry room, the terror in a little girl's eyes, and the web of lies spun by a greedy man who thought money made him invincible.
Julian Vance had been convicted and was serving a thirty-year sentence in a maximum-security prison, his fortune seized, his name erased from the city’s skyline. The lie he had buried had been dragged into the light and completely destroyed.
But out of that dark, toxic lie, something pure had grown.
Daniel Cole had spent his entire life building towers of concrete and glass to prove he was strong. But as he stood on the lawn, holding his wife's hand and watching his children laugh under the afternoon sun, he knew the truth.

The greatest empire he would ever own wasn't built on Michigan Avenue.
It was built right here, in the warmth of a home where no child would ever have to scrub away a stain in fear, and where love was the only thing that lasted forever.
