Chapter 10 - Forever Home

The sun was setting over the Atlantic Ocean, casting a breathtaking canopy of gold, crimson, and lavender across the sky above the Acevedo estate.
The heavy oak front doors swung open, and Roberto stepped into the grand foyer, carrying his briefcase.
Before he could even take off his coat, a blur of bright yellow and denim came flying down the hallway.
"Roberto!" Ana squealed, throwing her arms around his waist nearly knocking him off balance.
Roberto laughed, dropping his briefcase and picking her up, spinning her around as she giggled delightedly. "Easy there, tiger! Did you miss me that much?"
"Of course we did!" Ana beamed, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Grandma made brigadeiros, and Lia has been waiting by the door for an hour!"
Just then, two-year-old Lia toddled down the hall as fast as her little legs could carry her, shouting, "Berto! Berto!" with a huge, toothy grin.
Roberto set Ana down on her feet, scooped up Lia, and planted a loud kiss on her cheek, making her shriek with laughter.
Mrs. Silva wheeled into the hallway from the garden, her face glowing with warmth and affection. "Welcome home, Roberto. We watched the news from Brasília. You were magnificent."
"Thank you, Grandma," Roberto smiled, walking over to join them as they gathered in the spacious, sunlit kitchen.
The table was set with fresh pastries, warm coffee, and a plate of sweet chocolate treats. Through the wide glass doors leading to the back deck, the ocean waves whispered softly against the shore, a peaceful, eternal rhythm.
Roberto sat down at the head of the table with Lia on his lap, while Ana sat beside him, eagerly telling him all about her spelling test at school that day. Mrs. Silva poured the coffee, her eyes shining with peace and gratitude.
Roberto looked around the table at the family he never expected to have—the little girl who had stopped him in a crowded street, the baby whose life he had fought to save, the wise grandmother who anchored them all, and the lingering, beautiful spirit of Clara watching over them from somewhere close.
The emptiness that had haunted his mansion for three years was gone forever, replaced by warmth, laughter, and unconditional love.

He raised his coffee cup in a silent toast to the window, smiling as the evening breeze rolled in from the sea.
He was home.
