Inside the newly established neonatal care wing, Dr. Claire Dawson pinned her new badge to her lab coat: Chief of Pediatric Ethics and Newborn Care.
Her phone chimed in her pocket. She pulled it out to see a photo message from Mara Ellis.
It showed little Leo—now sitting up on a colorful play mat, clutching a stuffed plush bear with both hands, laughing brightly at the camera. Standing right beside him in the sunny living room was Tessa Lane, looking healthy, radiant, and stronger than she ever had before.
Tessa had returned to college to finish her degree in social work, determined to use her experience to help other young mothers navigate difficult times without ever falling prey to predators like Nolan Mercer.
