Chapter 2 - The Tracker in the Wood

The cold metal of the music box felt heavy in Claire’s palm. She stared at the tiny green light pulsing rhythmically against the polished cherry wood, a silent pulse broadcasting her exact coordinates to the man she thought she knew.

Eleven months of dinners, whispered confidences, and quiet weekends at his lake house suddenly unspooled in her mind, recontextualized by a single blinking diode. He hadn’t just been dating her; he had been monitoring her proximity to his operation.

Her phone buzzed again.

You’re frightened, Claire. Don’t be. I only protect what belongs to the foundation. Bring the boy down to the diagnostic lab on floor B2. We need to secure his samples before the state medical examiners contaminate the lineage.

She locked her phone screen without replying. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but clinical discipline—honed through a decade of saving tiny, fragile lives—took over. She slipped the music box into a lead-lined biohazard disposal bin beneath the counter, blocking the signal, and turned her attention back to the incubator.

Baby 19 shifted, letting out a soft, mewling cry.

“I’ve got you,” she whispered, her voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking in her veins.

Ten minutes later, Detective Mara Ellis walked into the NICU, her trench coat damp from the midnight drizzle outside. She didn't look at the charts; she looked straight into Claire’s eyes.

“He’s watching you,” Mara said quietly, keeping her voice low so the nurses nearby wouldn’t overhear.

“He knows I’m here,” Claire replied, handing Mara the printout from the lab regarding the metal bracelet. “And he knows what the bracelet means. It’s not just a tracking tag, Mara. It’s an accession number. My God, Nolan isn't just a philanthropist. He’s curating a biological registry.”

Mara scanned the document, her jaw tightening. “We found Tessa’s abandoned car an hour ago near the north docks. Her purse was inside, along with a burner phone. The last outgoing call was to an address registered under an LLC tied to Bright Tomorrow.”

“Is she alive?” Claire asked.

“We don’t know yet,” Mara said grimly. “But we have a warrant to search Nolan’s primary estate at dawn. Until then, we need to move this baby. St. Anne’s isn’t secure. Mercer’s private security firm handles half the municipal contracts in this district; his men could walk in here with a court order signed by a corrupt judge within the hour.”

Claire didn't hesitate. “Transfer orders. I’ll sign off on an emergency transfer to County General under a pseudonym. We smuggle him out in a transport incubator through the laundry service exit.”

By 4:00 a.m., Baby 19 was tucked inside a portable unit, nestled deep within a cart of sterile linens. Mara pushed the cart herself, while Claire walked ahead in her scrubs, flashing her badge to every security camera they passed.

They reached the unmarked cruiser waiting in the subterranean bay just as a sleek black SUV glided down the ramp.

The headlights of Nolan’s vehicle flashed twice. A familiar figure stepped out from behind the wheel—not Nolan, but his head of security, a broad-shouldered ex-military operative named Vance.

“Dr. Dawson,” Vance called out, his voice echoing off the concrete pillars. “Mr. Mercer requests that you return the child to his care. Immediately.”

Mara’s hand dropped instantly to the service weapon at her hip. “Step away from the vehicle, Mr. Vance. You are interfering with an active police investigation.”

Vance didn’t blink. He smiled, a cold, humorless expression. “Detective Ellis. You’re punching way above your weight class. That child is corporate property under the Bright Tomorrow health waiver signed by the birth mother.”

“A contract signed under duress and deception is null and void,” Mara snapped, drawing her weapon and aiming it squarely at Vance’s chest. “Get in your car and drive away, or I will arrest you for obstruction and kidnapping.”

Vance held his ground for three agonizing seconds, weighing his options, before slowly raising his hands. He stepped back into the SUV, threw it into reverse, and vanished back up the ramp.

As Mara and Claire sped away into the grey dawn, neither of them knew that Vance’s retreat was only a feint. The real trap had already been laid miles away, at the address found on Tessa’s burner phone.
