Chapter 7 - Shadows from the Past

As the week turned into a month, the bond between Maxwell, Maya, and little Jacob deepened into something permanent. The nursery was no longer a place of dread; it was the heart of the home, filled with laughter, the scent of chamomile, and the soft patter of tiny feet as Jacob began to crawl.

However, tranquility in the upper echelons of society rarely goes unnoticed.

Word had spread through the exclusive Hamptons social circles that Maxwell Reed had replaced his high-priced medical staff with an unknown young woman from a working-class background. Whispers turned into gossip, and gossip eventually caught the attention of the people Maxwell had tried hardest to keep at a distance: his late wife’s family.

The Vanderbilt-adjacent Hallowell family had never truly approved of Maxwell. To them, he was a self-made tech mogul—nouveau riche, too aggressive, too modern. They believed that after Emma’s tragic passing, Jacob rightfully belonged under the care of aristocratic relatives who understood proper breeding and social standing.

It happened on a crisp Tuesday afternoon.

Maxwell was in his study reviewing financial reports when the intercom buzzed sharply. Mrs. Gable’s voice came through, trembling slightly.

“Mr. Reed... you have visitors. Mr. and Mrs. Hallowell are in the foyer. They refused to wait.”

Maxwell’s jaw clenched. He stood up immediately, straightening his jacket, and strode out of the office.

Before he reached the grand staircase, he heard the sharp, imperious voice of Arthur Hallowell echoing across the marble floor.

“This is completely unacceptable! A common transient living in our grandson’s home? Maxwell has completely lost his mind!”

Maxwell rounded the corner into the grand foyer. Standing by the double doors were his late wife’s parents, Arthur and Eleanor Hallowell, accompanied by a sharp-eyed family attorney holding a thick leather portfolio.

Maya was standing near the bottom of the stairs, holding Jacob calmly against her hip. She wore a simple linen dress, her posture upright and completely unfazed by the hostile energy radiating from the older couple.

“Arthur. Eleanor,” Maxwell said, his voice cold and dangerous as winter ice. “What are you doing here?”

Eleanor Hallowell stepped forward, her eyes scanning Maya with undisguised disdain before locking onto Maxwell.

“We are here to rescue our grandson, Maxwell,” Eleanor said, her voice dripping with aristocratic condescension. “We heard rumors that you’ve turned this estate into a commune, employing some untrained vagrant to raise the heir to the Reed fortune. Emma would be horrified.”

“Do not speak my wife’s name,” Maxwell warned, stepping down the stairs and placing himself directly between the Hallowells and Maya. “And do not ever walk into my home and insult the woman who saved my son’s life.”

The family attorney stepped up, pushing his glasses up his nose. “Mr. Reed, my clients have filed an emergency petition for temporary guardianship citing environmental instability and inappropriate staffing. We have a court order.”

The atmosphere in the foyer dropped to absolute zero.
