Chapter 7 - The Dawn of a New Era

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, washing the glass skyscrapers in a brilliant wash of gold and orange.

Back at the Eldergate estate, the sea breeze was warm for a change, carrying the scent of blooming magnolias up from the western wall.

Lina woke up curled under a soft cashmere blanket on the large sofa in Damiano’s private study. She rubbed her eyes, yawning sleepily, her pink hair clip resting neatly on the side table. She sat up and looked around the familiar room.

The walnut desk was neat. The middle drawer was closed, the small wooden box tucked safely inside.

The heavy oak door opened softly, and Damiano walked in carrying a small tray with a cup of warm milk and a plate of warm pastries from the kitchen. He wasn't wearing his gloves. His hands were completely bare, resting naturally against the edges of the tray.

Lina’s face lit up with a bright, gap-toothed smile as soon as she saw him.

"Signor Damiano!" she chirped, scrambling off the sofa and running over to wrap her arms around his right leg just like she did every single day.

Damiano set the tray down on the edge of the desk, kneeling down so he was eye-level with the little girl. For the first time in over a decade, his face didn't carry the shadow of the past. The ghost of his father's watch ticking away in his pocket didn't feel like a weight anymore; it felt like time well earned.

He reached out and gently stroked her wild curls, his bare fingers touching her hair with a tenderness that surprised even himself.

"Good morning, little one," Damiano said, his voice warm and steady. "Are you hungry?"

Lina nodded vigorously. "And Biscotti wants breakfast too!"

May you like

Damiano chuckled—a deep, resonant sound that echoed through the quiet study, signaling the end of the dark winter and the beginning of something entirely new. Down in the courtyard, the old stone fountain suddenly sputtered to life, sending a sparkling arc of fresh water dancing into the morning air.

The house by the sea finally felt like a home.
