Chapter 4 - Confrontation at the Gates

The heavy oak front door flew open, slamming against the interior wall with a deafening thud. Parker marched into the foyer, his face flushed red with anger, his tie loosened at his collar.

"Clarissa!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the open floor plan. "Where are you?"

I calmly stood up from the dining table, instructed Dustin to go to his bedroom and play with his headphones on, and walked out into the living room to face my husband.

"I'm right here, Parker," I said, keeping my posture straight and my expression neutral.

Parker paced toward me, shaking his head in total disbelief. "Are you out of your mind? I had to pick up my mother and sister from the train station! They were sitting on a wooden bench like homeless people, crying! Ellie’s kid was terrified! How could you do something so cruel?"

"Did you ask them what they did to Dustin before you picked them up?" I asked smoothly.

"They told me everything!" Parker snapped, throwing his hands in the air. "Dustin was being disobedient, so Mom put him in time-out and gave him a simple meal to teach him humility! You completely overreacted because of your overprotective instincts! You humiliated my mother!"

"A cold, unseasoned boiled potato, Parker," I repeated, stepping closer to him. "While they sat at the same table eating fried chicken and candy that I paid for. Is that 'teaching humility,' or is that psychological abuse?"

"It's discipline!" Parker shouted back. "He’s a child! He needs to learn boundaries! You spoil him endlessly because he’s adopted, and it’s making him entitled!"

The word hung in the air like poison. Because he's adopted.

I stared at the man I had married two years ago, suddenly feeling as though I was looking at a complete stranger. "Is that really how you feel, Parker? Do you think Dustin is entitled because I expect him to be treated like a human being in his own home?"

"I think you prioritize him over me and my family!" Parker snapped, taking a step toward me, trying to use his height to intimidate me. "This marriage is a partnership, Clarissa! My mother and sister are part of this family. You had no right to throw them out of our house!"

"This is my house," I corrected him sharply. "I bought it five years before I met you. I pay the mortgage. I pay the property taxes. You have not contributed a single dollar to this property."

Parker’s face twisted in frustration. "We are married! What's yours is mine! I’ve been asking you for months to add my name to the deed so we can manage our assets properly, but you keep stalling. Now I see why! You want to hold it over my head!"

I took out my phone from my pocket. "Is that really why you wanted your name on the deed, Parker? For 'asset management'?"

May you like

He frowned, confused by my sudden change in tone. "What are you talking about?"

"Sit down, Parker," I said quietly. "I have something you need to hear."
