Chapter 8 - Forever Family

Two days after the successful grand reopening of the inn, a formal hearing was scheduled at the regional family courthouse in Denver. It was the final step in finalizing the permanent legal adoption of Maisie Hart by Callum Sterling.

The courtroom was quiet and dignified. Judge Eleanor Vance (no relation to Marcus Vance) sat at the high wooden bench, reviewing the extensive thick dossier of evaluations, social worker reports, financial guarantees, and character references provided on Callum’s behalf. Marcus Vance sat at the legal counsel table, while Callum and Maisie sat side by side at the front.

Judge Vance lowered her reading glasses and looked down at Callum over the top of her desk. "Mr. Sterling, your financial capability to provide for this child is beyond question. However, this court is primarily interested in the emotional and stability aspects of adoption. You spent twenty years working eighty-hour weeks in corporate finance, traveling constantly. Are you truly prepared to dedicate yourself fully to raising a child?"

Callum stood up, looking directly at the judge. "Your Honor, ten months ago, my life was measured entirely by quarterly returns and corporate acquisitions. I had no family, no roots, and no true peace. Taking Maisie into my life didn't disrupt my career—it saved my life. I have stepped down from corporate executive roles. My primary work and residence are at the inn in Silverpine. My priority, every single day, is ensuring Maisie feels loved, safe, and supported in every way possible."

Judge Vance nodded slowly, then turned her eyes toward Maisie. "Maisie, would you like to come speak to me for a moment?"

Maisie let go of Cloud and walked bravely up to the judge's bench. She was no longer the frightened girl who hid in shadows. She stood tall and looked up at the judge.

"What would you like to tell me, Maisie?" Judge Vance asked with a soft, encouraging smile.

"Callum is my hero," Maisie said clearly, her voice filling the courtroom. "When I was cold in the snow, he gave me his big coat. When I was scared, he told me I didn't have to be expensive anymore. He fixed Mommy's inn, he reads me bedtime stories every night, and he learned how to braid my hair—even though he's not very good at it yet."

A soft wave of light laughter rippled through the courtroom, and Callum smiled warmly, rubbing the back of his neck.

"He makes me feel like I belong somewhere," Maisie added, her eyes turning toward Callum with complete trust and love. "I want him to be my daddy forever."

Judge Vance’s expression softened completely. She picked up her heavy wooden gavel. "In my twenty-five years on the family bench, I have rarely seen a bond formed so quickly and so genuinely. The court finds that it is entirely in the best interest of the child to grant this petition."

She brought the gavel down with a firm, resounding BANG.

"Petition granted. Maisie Hart is hereby legally adopted by Callum Sterling. She shall henceforth be known as Maisie Hart Sterling. Congratulations to you both."

Maisie turned and ran into Callum's open arms as he knelt down on the courtroom floor. He picked her up, swinging her around in a joyful hug while tears of pure happiness welled in his eyes. "Thank you, daughter," Callum whispered into her hair. "Thank you for choosing me."
