Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Secrets

By three o'clock in the morning, the snowstorm had eased into a steady, silent drift. Maisie had fallen fast asleep in the diner booth, wrapped tightly in Callum's cashmere coat, clutching Cloud against her ribs. Martha had kindly kept the diner open past closing, pouring Callum cup after cup of black coffee while he sat at the table with his laptop open, receiving encrypted files sent directly from Marcus Vance's legal team.

What Callum uncovered over the next two hours made his jaw clench tightly. Richard Vance—no relation to his lawyer—was a low-level gambler and opportunist who had inveigled his way into Lily Hart’s life during her final months when she was weakened by terminal illness. Richard had promised to manage her meager estate and ensure Maisie was taken care of. Instead, the moment Lily passed away, Richard had taken control of the small trust fund Lily’s parents had left behind, squandered the money on illegal gambling debts, and had been secretly plotting to place Maisie into an unregulated, gray-market foster placement in exchange for a cash payout to clear his debts.

Even more shocking to Callum was the document buried deep within the county land registry records attached to Lily's name. The Sterling Pines Inn had not been completely sold off twenty years ago as Callum had believed. His late father, in a desperate bid to preserve a piece of his legacy, had transferred forty percent of the land rights to Lily’s mother—who had subsequently passed them down to Lily. Upon Lily's death, those land rights had been placed into an irrevocable trust for Maisie Hart.

Callum sat back against the red vinyl booth, staring at the screen in disbelief. The very property that Callum’s investment firm, Sterling Holdings, was currently attempting to buy out from a local development group to turn into a luxury commercial center belonged, in substantial part, to the little girl sleeping peacefully across from him.

"She doesn't even know," Callum murmured under his breath. "She has no idea what she holds."

At six in the morning, two vehicles pulled up outside the diner. The first was a Silverpine Police Department cruiser; the second was a sleek black SUV carrying Marcus Vance, who had boarded a private charter flight from Chicago the moment Callum made the call. Police Chief Thomas Miller, a silver-haired veteran who remembered Callum as a teenager, stepped into the diner, shaking the frost off his hat.

"Callum," Chief Miller said, taking off his gloves. "Marcus briefed me on the way from the airstrip. We executed a search warrant on Richard’s residence an hour ago. We found him packing his bags, preparing to skip town. He had forged adoption waivers in his trunk and a stack of unpaid debt notices. He’s in a holding cell right now, facing child endangerment, fraud, and unlawful restraint charges."

Callum stood up, extending his hand to the chief. "Thank you, Thomas. Is she safe from him legally?"

Marcus Vance stepped forward, opening a leather briefcase and laying out a stack of stamped court documents. "I contacted the regional family court judge at 4:00 AM. Given the criminal charges against Richard and the extraordinary circumstances, the judge has signed an emergency temporary protective custody order granting you, Callum, legal custody of Maisie Hart pending a full hearing. You are officially her legal guardian as of twenty minutes ago."

Callum looked down at his own hands. For fifteen years, those hands had signed multi-million dollar contracts, acquired rival corporations, and managed thousands of employees without a single tremor. Now, holding a piece of paper that made him responsible for a small, innocent life, his fingers trembled slightly.

Just then, Maisie stirred. She rubbed her eyes with tiny fists, sitting up slowly. She looked around at the chief in uniform, at the stranger in the suit, and then her eyes darted frantically to Callum. Panic began to rise in her pale face.

Callum immediately crouched beside her booth, putting himself at her eye level, just as he had done under the street lamp in the snow. "Hey," he said softy, keeping his hands open. "It's okay, Maisie. You're completely safe. No one is ever going to hurt you or make you go anywhere you don't want to go. I promised you, remember?"

May you like

Maisie looked into Callum's eyes for a long moment, searching for any sign of deceit. Finding none, the tension left her small shoulders. She reached out and took his hand, her tiny fingers wrapping around his thumb. "Can Cloud and I stay with you?" she asked softly.

"As long as you want," Callum replied, a genuine warmth spreading through his heart that he hadn't felt in decades. "In fact, I think it's time we go check into a place that belongs to both of us."
