Chapter 2 - Chemical Lies and Deceit

The fluorescent lights of the trauma corridor flickered as Naomi held the preliminary report tightly in her hand. Varenol B was an experimental respiratory stimulant—a compound specifically designed to treat advanced lung disease in adults, currently undergoing phase-two trials under a subsidiary of Sherman Enterprises. In a four-year-old child, even a tiny micro-dose would cause acute anaphylactoid shock, constricted airways, and systemic vascular collapse.

“Varenol B isn't available to the general public,” Naomi said, her voice icy, professional, and entirely devoid of personal malice. She locked eyes with Elijah. “It’s a controlled experimental compound. How did this end up in a four-year-old’s bloodstream?”

Elijah stood paralyzed, his wet tailored coat hanging heavy on his shoulders. He looked between Naomi—cool, competent, and completely untainted by the scandal he had thrown her into—and Cassandra, who was frantically tapping at her phone screen.

“Cassandra,” Elijah’s voice dropped, rich with a sudden, horrifying suspicion. “What were you deleting just now?”

“Nothing!” Cassandra snapped, snatching her designer purse closer to her chest. “I was telling my sister that Toby was in the hospital! You’re actually listening to this woman? Elijah, think! She’s trying to destroy us! She was bitter when you threw her out. She’s framing me!”

“Framing you?” Naomi asked quietly. She gestured to the sealed specimen cup on the metal tray beside her. “The liquid in this unlabeled bottle was retrieved directly from your handbag while you were attempting to conceal it under your coat in the triage bay. Nurse Fiona witnessed it. The lab matched the contents of this bottle directly to the compound in Toby’s blood.”

Cassandra’s chest heaved. “I don't know what that is! Someone must have slipped it into my bag!”

“Nobody slipped anything into your bag, Cassandra,” Elijah said softly, though his knuckles were white as he clenched his fists. The blind trust he had placed in her for the past six months was fracturing right before his eyes. “You brought the bottle. You gave him the dose, didn't you?”

“No! I thought it was his cough syrup!” Cassandra cried, her tears turning into sharp, desperate screams. “He was coughing yesterday! I bought it from the natural holistic store! I didn't know!”

“A holistic store selling a black-market pharmaceutical compound that hasn't even been cleared by the FDA?” Naomi’s cold logic pierced through Cassandra's lies like a scalpel. “Varenol B is synthesized in only one facility in North America—Apex Bio-Tech, a firm your venture capital group pushed Sherman Enterprises to acquire three months ago.”

Elijah turned sharply toward Cassandra. The silence in the hallway became deafening. Six months ago, Cassandra had presented Elijah with documents claiming Naomi was funneling money out of Sherman Enterprises into offshore accounts. He had trusted Cassandra because she had been his executive assistant, a woman who seemed dedicated only to his family’s well-being. He had humiliated Naomi, stripped her of her home, and publicly denounced her to safeguard his empire.

Now, standing in the cold light of the hospital, the horrifying reality began to dawn on him: he had cast out a blameless woman and welcomed a monster into his home.

“I want security at this door,” Naomi told the head nurse, deliberately ignoring the raw emotional storm brewing between her ex-husband and his mistress. “Toby is entering a stabilization window, but Varenol B causes secondary cardiac spikes after four hours. No one—and I mean no one—enters this pediatric room without my direct authorization.”

“You can’t keep me from my son!” Cassandra shrieked, taking a step toward Naomi.

“He isn't your biological son, Cassandra,” Naomi reminded her calmly. “And right now, you are the prime suspect in an active child-poisoning investigation. The hospital legal team has already alerted the police.”

As if on cue, the heavy double doors at the end of the hallway swung open. Two uniform officers from the Minneapolis Police Department walked briskly down the corridor.

Cassandra backed away, her eyes wild with panic. “Elijah, do something! Talk to them! You own half this city! You can stop this!”

Elijah didn't look at her. His gaze was fixed on Naomi, whose calm, steadfast posture stood in stark contrast to the chaotic web of lies he had foolishly allowed into his life.

“Officers,” Elijah said, his voice shaking with a mixture of rage and overwhelming guilt, “the doctor has the toxicology report. Please secure that bottle.”

Cassandra was escorted away, her hysterical screams fading down the corridor.

Elijah stepped closer to Naomi, his hands trembling. “Naomi... I... I don't know what to say. If you hadn't been here tonight—”

“I am Dr. Wheeler to you, Mr. Sherman,” Naomi cut him off cleanly, holding up a hand. “I am your son’s attending physician. Nothing more. If you wish to stay, sit in the waiting room. I have work to do.”
