Chapter 1 - The Midnight Shadow of St. Andrews

“If my son d:ies, I’ll buy this hospital and fire every last one of you!”
Cassandra Kelley’s scream echoed through the pediatric emergency department at St. Andrews Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis just as Dr. Naomi Wheeler finished stabilizing a young girl suffering from a severe asthma at:tack.
Outside, rain pounded against the windows.
Inside, Elijah Sherman burst through the doors, drenched from the storm, carrying four-year-old Toby in his arms. The little boy’s lips had turned purple, and his body hung limp.
Naomi stepped forward to take the child, but the instant she saw Elijah’s face, she froze for the briefest second.
Elijah had once been her husband.
Six months earlier, he had accused her of marrying him for his money. After believing falsified bank statements, he had publicly thrown her out of their home in front of reporters. Cassandra, who had been his mistress at the time, proudly introduced herself as the “honest” woman who would build a new family with him.
Now Elijah stood trembling before the woman he had humiliated.
“Trau:ma room. Now,” Naomi ordered. “Fiona, start an IV. Gabriel, get him on the monitor, start oxygen, and prepare the intubation equipment.”
There were no accusations. No questions about the past. At that moment, she saw only one thing: A little boy struggling to breathe.
Cassandra explained that Toby had eaten shrimp and might be having an allergic reaction. But Elijah insisted the boy had eaten shrimp many times before without any problems.
Naomi noticed Cassandra’s strange hesitation, the overpowering perfume she was wearing, and an unlabeled bottle partially hidden inside her handbag.
After several tense minutes, Toby finally responded to treatment. When he managed to open his eyes, Naomi leaned closer so she could hear him.
“It wasn't the shrimp... It was Mommy’s medicine,” he whispered.
Naomi's expression never changed. She gently assured him that he was safe before ordering an expanded toxicology screen, laboratory testing of the liquid inside the bottle, and secure preservation of every sample.
Cassandra exploded. “She’s using my son to get revenge on us! I want another doctor!”
Moments later, the hospital's medical director arrived wearing an uneasy smile. He knew Elijah owned luxury hotels, construction companies, and a network of private hospitals whose foundation provided financial support to their facility.
“Dr. Wheeler,” he said cautiously, “perhaps it would be wise to transfer this case to avoid any conflict of interest.”
Naomi calmly closed the patient's chart. “I'll step aside if you put it in writing that you're ordering this transfer before the toxicology results are available, despite the mother's contradictory statements.”
The director immediately went pale.
Elijah looked at Cassandra. Under the bright hospital lights, her tears looked more like anger than fear.
“Naomi stays,” he said at last.
Several hours later, Fiona handed Naomi the sealed bottle. “It smells sweet,” she said, “but it doesn't seem like children's medicine.”
Naomi studied the thick liquid. Toby slept quietly, surrounded by monitors, his tiny fists clenched tightly. When he briefly woke up, he looked at her with frightened eyes. “Is Daddy going to be mad because I told the truth?”
At 3:12 that morning, the preliminary laboratory report arrived. The boy's bl00d contained traces of Varenol B, an experimental compound owned by a pharmaceutical company that had recently been acquired by Sherman Enterprises.
Elijah immediately recognized the name. So did Cassandra.

When Naomi looked up from the report, she saw Cassandra hurriedly deleting messages from her phone.
What was about to happen next seemed impossible to believe.
